Progressing through the story can be difficult sometimes for a variety of reasons: you don’t have decent enough gear; you didn’t roll out of the way early enough; you didn’t connect the right spells; or you weren’t wearing a pretty enough scarf.

All valid reasons mind you, swinging a wooden stick in a wanton manner while shouting mouth noises can prove to be challenging if done at the same time.

You could always come back to the quest you were struggling with at a higher level but where’s the fun in that? Let’s walk through what you can do to get better!

How to get Better: Ultimate Combat Guide | Hogwarts Legacy

The combat in the game tends to throw a lot at you, quite literally at times.

We’ve seen boxes get thrown at us while we’re in the middle of taking explosive damage to the point where we feel like we’re being stun-locked.

Here are a few things you can take into consideration to avoid that.

#1 Focus on combinations

You’re better off chaining your spells rather than casting them individually.

The easiest way to do this is to start off with Levioso and juggle your enemies around the air with normal spell shots.

Don’t use your basic cast as that will send your enemy flying and will also end the combo abruptly.

#2 Remember the colors

You may have noticed at some point in the game that your enemies have shields, these shields can be taken down as long as you’re using the correct spells. You will know as the colors are displayed on your spell slots. Fiddle around with your settings to mix and match whatever works for you.

#3 Use ancient magic

You’re stringing combos together for a reason, once your combo meter fills up use a bar or two to easily break through an enemy shield and watch them get disintegrated or be cast into the void.

This may count as murder in the wizarding world but better them than you, right?

#4 Knock people off the high ground

Anakin lost to Obi-Wan simply because he had high ground. Don’t make the same mistake and prioritize anyone you see who’s one or two flights above you.

#5 Stealth is your friend

Use the Disillusionment spell to get around your foes undetected, you can even string this with Petrificus Totalus to get rid of them easier.

This can also be used if you’re overwhelmed and want to get off a bind.

#6 Know your enemy

Read more about the weaknesses or recommended spells you can use on the creatures you encounter out in the wild.

You can access that information in your collections. Make Sun Tzu proud!

#7 Wear the right gear

Some do it for style, and some do it just to survive another hit long enough to heal.

Equip the item you need before heading off into battle and make sure you have every potion you need accessible on your item wheel.

#8 Avoid AOE

Enemies have area-of-effect attacks, get familiar with how they behave in the middle of combat.

Some will burrow into the ground and others will jump into the air, once you see that happen make a decision and roll your way to safety.

#9 Use Protego

Think of this as your parry spell, if you time your cast just as a spell is about to hit you that projectile will bounce back to the guy who threw it your way.

You can even deflect two projectiles by upgrading it in your Talents screen.

#10 Learn more spells

Not a strict requirement as you can finish the game without learning every spell under the sun but doing optional side quests for your professors can still help out a lot, especially if you want to learn how to blow somebody up using Bombarda.

With those pointers in mind, you will definitely see some improvements in your wand-waving and fat rolling.

Now go find a poacher and take your frustrations out on them with a red barrel!

Here we have Alexis, he's been gaming ever since the second Famicom came out. Which is probably the reason why he goes back to platformers every now and then. Somewhere down the line he started getting more and more fascinated about looking at maps change colors for three to eight hours straight. If he's not out strategizing and beating the life out of his space bar in that order there's a good chance you can find him playing an FPS or talking someone's ear out about how game balance gets in the way of realism. You can tell that he really likes getting the full experience of whatever he gets his hands on.
