Seeing the Adamantine Forge for the first time in Baldur’s Gate 3 is quite the experience. You know that the game wants you to use it since there’s varying moulds scattered around the place as you get closer. But you also know that it’s too good to be true for the game to just toss you equipment made out of the best possible material in the realm. There has to be a catch right?
Your guess would be correct, the problem is you’ve already lowered the lever and you’re seconds away from fighting the Eternal Protector of the Forge. Find out how you can defeat him easily and claim what is yours!
How to Defeat Adamantine Forge Boss Grym
Grym weighs at least 5000 kilograms and has the height of three Karlachs put together. The toughest nut to crack by far in the game. He’ll only lay waste to you and your party once you activate the Adamantine Forge for the first time, so that allows you to do a bit of prep work.
You already know what we’ll be using to get rid of him in a laughable manner. So be sure that you’ve already read our guide on how to use the Adamantine Forge if you want to get the hammer to work.
Consider placing the rest of your party members on the west side of the forge. Do not step on the lowered sections as that is where the lava will pour in. You can give Astarion a Scroll of Invisibility, so he’ll be able to operate the valve without using up an action.
You can also just have him crouch and hide next to the valve, so Grym won’t spot him. Just be sure to enter Turn-Based mode before you actually activate it.
Now that he’s out, have your fighter or barbarian jump on the crucible. Grym won’t do anything on his first turn aside from casting Awaken.
You can even shoot him from a distance if you want to earn his ire. You would want to position the rest of your party (except for Astarion) behind whoever’s on the crucible.
This is to make sure that Grym actually walks towards it and not send any of you flying off the forge when he gets close. Don’t jump off the crucible just yet, this will redirect Gryms pathing and he’ll ignore the center of the forge completely.
This is where the money shot takes place. He’s well in the middle of the crucible and didn’t get close enough to attack. Have your barbarian or fighter move away from the platform and activate the lever.
You can have other party members shoot the lever as well. Make sure that there’s lava on the forge for the hammer to go down. That’s Astarion’s job!
Once the hammer drops and Grym realizes his predicament, Magma Mephits will spawn in. Have a wizard or sorcerer dispatch those by casting any spell that deals cold damage. By this time, Grym will also lose the Superheated status, making him immune to any damage.
Negate that by pouring in more lava into the forge. Since he’s still prone he won’t be able to do much, and you’ve basically won. You’re going to want to drop the hammer on him a few more times, maybe three.
And that’s how you defeat the protector of the forge in Baldur’s Gate 3. Note that if you choose the easy yet obvious way of denting him permanently, you won’t get the achievement for fighting him fairly. But why should you?
