If you’re just getting started in Grounded 2, your thirst meter is going to humble you real quick. The game doesn’t go full survival mode like Don’t Starve or The Forest, but if you ignore your hydration bar, you’ll be face-first in a puddle faster than you can say “science!” And sure, that puddle water technically works, but it comes with side effects like food drain and potential sickness. Not ideal when you’re being chased by a spider the size of a motorcycle. Thankfully, clean water is actually pretty easy to find. Even better, you can store it for later using a canteen, so you’re not scrambling every morning for one dew drop like it’s the last coffee in the office.
How to Get & Store Water with Water Canteen
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best ways to get clean water early in Grounded 2 and how to store it properly with a canteen. We’ll cover:
- How to find and harvest dew drops
- How to craft your first canteen and what materials you need
- Where to get Grub Hide (the most annoying part, let’s be honest)
- How to build a Dew Collector later on for that sweet passive hydration
Let’s get that thirst meter under control, tiny survivor style.

How to Find and Drink Dew Drops (Clean Water)
Dew drops are your main early-game water source, and they’re actually easy to miss if you’re not looking up.
Here’s how it works:
- Look up at blades of grass as you explore. Every now and then, you’ll spot a shiny orb of water clinging to a leaf.
- Follow the grass blade down to the base of the plant.
- Whip out your axe (which you should already have from the early story missions) and give it two good chops.
- The dew drop will fall. Follow it, they bounce and can roll off.
- Walk up and press E (or your controller prompt) to drink.
Boom. Free, clean water. No food penalty. No nasty aftertaste. Just hydration the way nature intended.
Bonus Tip: Juice Drops Are Also Hydrating
Occasionally, you’ll spot juice drops near fallen fruit or juice boxes scattered around the yard. These restore water and a bit of food, making them a great bonus find. They’re rarer than dew but worth grabbing when you see one.

How to Store Water: Crafting a Canteen
Now that you know how to drink, let’s talk about storing that precious liquid. You’re not always going to be near dew, especially on longer runs or during boss fights. That’s where the canteen comes in handy.
To craft a basic canteen, you’ll need:
- 2 Grub Hide
- 3 Crude Rope
Let’s break down how to get those.

How to Get Grub Hide
Grub Hide comes from—you guessed it—grubs. But they’re not just lying around waiting to be picked up. You’ll need to dig them up.
Here’s how:
- Progress through the main story until you unlock the Omni Tool and Shovel Module at the lab.
- Craft your shovel once unlocked.
- You’ll need Grass Seed for this.
- Head outside and look for wiggling dirt trails on the ground.
- Dig at that moving trail, and a grub will pop out.
- Beat it quickly and harvest the Grub Hide.
Grubs are mostly harmless, so this part isn’t too dangerous, just slightly annoying to track.
How to Get Crude Rope
Crude Rope is thankfully simple:
- Collect Plant Fiber, which grows literally everywhere.
- Open your Crafting Menu > Resources tab.
- Craft Crude Rope from Plant Fiber.
Easy crafting win. You’ll need a lot of rope for other gear too, so it’s worth farming fiber regularly.

How to Craft the Canteen (Workbench Needed)
To actually build the canteen, you need a Workbench. Here’s the fast recipe:
- 3 Grass Planks
- 2 Sprigs
- 1 Sap
To build the workbench:
- Open your Construction Wheel (press B or Up on D-pad).
- Place the Workbench blueprint.
- Add the materials.
- Once built, go to the Tools section and craft your canteen.
Congrats! Now you’ve got your hydration on the go.
How to Use the Canteen
Using the canteen is pretty straightforward, but here’s a quick rundown:
- Equip the canteen from your inventory.
- When you find a dew drop, walk up and press E to scoop it instead of drinking.
- It now stores that drop until you need it.
- To drink from your canteen, just equip it and left-click (or trigger).
You can also put it on your hotbar for quick access during exploration or combat.
Tip: Easy Water Spot Near the Lab
If you built your base near the corporate facility lab, you’ve got a daily water jackpot nearby. Just climb to the top of the building, between the hydrant and the leaf, and you’ll usually find dew waiting for you every morning.
It’s an easy refill spot—no axe needed.

Optional: Build a Dew Collector (Passive Water Source)
Later in the game, you can craft a Dew Collector that gathers water passively every morning. It’s one of the best long-term survival structures—set it up, and you’ll never need to chop grass again.
But early on, stick with the axe and canteen combo until you unlock more resources.
Wrap-Up: Stay Hydrated, Stay Alive
Water may seem like a basic need, but it’s easy to overlook when you’re busy fighting ants, spiders, or building your base in Grounded 2. Thankfully, clean water is easy to access once you know where to look—and with your trusty canteen, you can stock up and stay hydrated on the go.
So keep your eyes on the grass, get your grub hide, and build that workbench. Before long, you’ll be sipping clean water like a backyard boss while the other bugs fight over puddles.
