To access the Work or Labor Menu you will need to go down to the bottom left corner of your screen and hit this hammer button. If you want to be faster than clicking with your mouse, you can always press Y on your keyboard too.

On the left side, you are able to see all of your work details. Here are all of the things that you are able to see:

  • Miners
  • Woodcutters
  • Hunters
  • Planters
  • Fishdwarves
  • Plant Gatherers
  • Stonecutters
  • Engravers
  • Haulers
  • Orderlies
  • Super Farmer
  • Animal Stuff
  • Custom Detail

Some of these are going to be default in the game while there are also other that you unlock while playing the game that you can add later on. When you select a specific work detail it will give you further information on the right side.

While you select a dwarf to work a certain work and you select Only Selected Do This, that means that no one else can do the job that you have specifically assigned to some workers. So for example you can set only certain dwarfs working on certain something.

If you want your dwarf to focus only on one thing and one thing only, you will have to assign the dwarf on working something and then select the hammer. Once the background of the hammer gets red you will know that the dwarf will be set for doing work.

You will always need to take a notion of what dwarf to place on what type of work. Some dwarfs are better suited to do a certain style of work, while others might be bad at it. The game has a priority system that will always set the bets dwarfs set to work on their best profession

The game works very well in terms of determining the Labor and Work Menu. Lots of players will agree that once you get past the beginning stages of the game where you don’t have enough dwarves, you won’t simply need to come back to the Work screen at all because the game knows where to send which types of dwarves.

That’s all that you need to know about the Labor and Work screen in Dwarf Fortress. We hope that this guide has helped you out on better understand it. A big thank you to FurtherReading from YouTube for his help and guidance.
