MultiVersus has finally relaunched, and as a free to play game with a ton of recognizable IPs and a whole lot of press coverage ever since its early testing days, it should come to no surprise that players are flocking to it once again. If you’re new to fighting games, you’ll undoubtedly struggle to pick a “main”, so let’s help you a bit with that!
What Character Should You Start With?
Although games tend to have a meta where certain characters are just plain better than others, the fighting genre tends to be a little more forgiving in this regard. Even “low tier” characters can be absolutely cracked in the right hands.
Because of this, the general advice for games like this is to simply pick whoever you think is cool and just start learning their mechanics. However, if you are really struggling to learn the game, then here are a few recommendations!
The Different Classes
Before we begin, MultiVersus has different categories for its characters that will give you a hint as to what choices are ideal for your playstyle. These classes are the following:
- Assassin – As you’d expect, assassins are quick and rely a lot on short-range combat and is great for people who like to rush their opponents. Current characters that fall under this class are:
- Arya Stark
- Stripe
- Harley Quinn
- Finn the Human
- Marvin the Martian
- Bruiser – These folks are essentially considered to be “jack of all trades” sort of fighters that can make them the perfect choices for learners. Here are the current bruisers:
- Batman
- Banana Guard
- Black Adam
- Jake the Dog
- Garnet
- LeBron James
- Morty
- Shaggy
- Taz
- Mage / Ranged – Naturally, these characters prefer to fight from a distance and are particularly good at zoning, but they fall off in short-range combat. The characters under this class are:
- Gizmo
- Reindog
- Joker
- Rick
- Velma
- Bugs Bunny
- Tom & Jerry
- Tank – Finally, the tanks are, as expected, slow but sturdy characters who excel at defensive plays and live to soak up as much damage as possible. They are the following:
- Jason
- Steven Universe
- The Iron Giant
- Wonder Woman
- Superman
Exactly Who Should You Pick?
Bruiser Players
For bruisers, the ideal starter picks are either Shaggy or Jake the Dog. Both of these characters are relatively easy to learn, and they have a well-rounded kit that makes them a solid choice in general.
Shaggy in particular has a ranged attack that allows you to occasionally sit back and zone your opponent. Jake, on the other hand, has long-reaching melee moves that are a decent alternative to projectiles.
Despite being considered as a bit of a joke character, Banana Guard is surprisingly okay as well. He has a fairly easy to learn kit, so you could also try him out if you want to keep things very simple.
Assassin Players
For people who prefer playing an assassin, Harley Quinn is a decent choice with a well-rounded kit and the ability to throw out traps to mess with your opponent.
Finn the Human is also an alright pick for beginners, and he has a special mechanic wherein coins will drop from enemies whenever he hits them. These can be used to purchase various buffs that will temporarily help you in the round.
Tank Players
Superman is the most well-rounded choice for new people who want to try out one of the tank characters in the game. He has ranged options, good mobility, and just a generally balanced kit that can kind of do it all.
Wonder Woman is another solid choice under this category, as she has a lot of useful tools such as a pulling attack that you can easily follow up with a string. It’s a fairly simple character who can help you learn the fundamentals of the game.
The newly added Jason Voorhees also seems like a decent choice for starters, though it is still a little too early to tell how good he really is. We have a combo guide for Jason Voorhees in the works that will help you out here.
Mage / Ranged Players
Finally, players who prefer a more range-focused playstyle will, obviously, want to choose a mage / ranged character. Bugs Bunny is an easy character to learn under this category, and new players will benefit from his fairly well-rounded move set.
Gizmo is another great choice for beginners. Just like Bugs, this character is very easy to learn and has some great and simple to execute zoning tools.
In Conclusion
Although some characters, such as the ones mentioned here, are fairly easy to pick up, don’t let that stop you from trying out the others as well. At the end of the day, it’s always better to main a character you are interested in rather than what is the “easiest” to play.
For instance, if you want to try learning Arya Stark over the easier to execute assassins in the game, knock yourself out. Just be ready for a steeper learning curve if you are going to steer away from more beginner-friendly choices.
That’s the beauty in fighting games, really. Something that’s hard for one player may be hilariously easy to execute for another. Hit up the lab (practice mode) and start experimenting with various characters.
Once you’ve gotten the bare basics down with one of our recommendations here, take the leap and play whatever you want online. You’ll get the hang of it eventually, even if you lose a lot at the start.
And that is everything you need to know when it comes to picking your starting character in the game. While you’re here, check out our Batman combo guide for MultiVersus too. It’s based on a much older patch, but it will give you some basic strings to try out for that character specifically.
