The Pup Buddy will produce special materials that you can use to craft whim potions. These potions are required to increase your load capabilities in the game. After your deviant gets rested and accumulates enough deviant power, it will start producing the material.

After your deviant produces the materials you need, you can head to the Supplies Workbench. There, you will be able to craft a whim potion called Featherweight Potion. That potion is indeed very useful since you will be looting a lot of materials throughout the map.
