Complete Fishing Guide

Getting Started

In order to get started at fishing you need to get a rod. The basic fishing rod, called Makeshift Rod, becomes available to The Player after unlocking the Fishing Skill. This rod allows the Player to catch fish and collect items from the water.

This can be obtained on your first day at Palia and will be given to you by Einar. He is the Fishing NPC and is located at the Fisherman’s Lagoon.

How to Fish

In any available bodies of water. When equipping the Fishing Rod, press and hold the left mouse button to determine how far you want to cast. Let go of the button to make the cast. A circle will appear on the water’s surface to show where the bobber will land.

Furthermore, when a fish is ready to bite, the bobber will move up and down. It produces a “splash” sound in three instances. After these three movements, a fish will leap out of the water. As the fish jumps, click the left mouse button to hook it. Clicking too early or too late will not initiate the fishing mini game, causing the fish to escape.

Additionally, you can identify which fish is biting from its distinctive animation. If you miss hooking a fish and it gets away, the same fish will eventually bite again.

In order to catch a different kind of fish, click the left mouse button when no fish is biting to reel in the line, then cast it again.

Equipping Bait

To equip worms, start by equipping your fishing rod from the tools section by pressing R. Following that, right-click and select whether to use the standard hook alone or enhance it with worms as bait, which will make fish appear.

A really important fishing trick to not waste bait and time is to not catch fish you don’t want. When you hear a loud signal that a fish is on the hook, you can see what kind of fish it is.

If it’s not the fish you want, you can stop reeling and let it go. After that, pull in your line and cast it again to get a different kind of fish. This way, you don’t waste your bait on the wrong fish.

Fishing Minigame

When a fish gets hooked, a minigame is activated, allowing the player to catch it. During this game, the fish moves the bobber left and right on the water’s surface. To control the process, the player uses a reticle, which can be moved with the mouse.

At the bottom of the screen, there’s a health bar that decreases when the line is damaged, but it regenerates when there’s no damage. If the health bar empties, the fish escapes. To reel in the line, move the reticle over the bobber using the mouse and hold the left mouse button.

Fishing in Palia

Only reel when the bobber is inside the reticle. When the bobber is in the reticle, indicated by a green reticle, reeling doesn’t harm the line.

Fishing in Palia

If the bobber is outside the reticle, the reticle turns red and reeling causes damage. Even if the player stops reeling when the reticle is red, the line still takes some damage, although less than when actively reeling.

When the player catches a fish with a full health bar, a message saying, “Perfect Catch!” appears. If the player catches a new fish, a message saying, “New Fish!” is displayed.

Types of Fish

Fish can show up in rivers, lakes, ponds, and along the coast. Certain fish will come out only during specific times like dusk, dawn and night, while some are around all day.

Various fish need various baits. Some fish will come without any bait, others need worms, and some only go for glowworms. Catching certain fish can be challenging and depends on your luck to make them bite.

Catching Difficult Fish

Occasionally, the fish might jump out of the water. During this jump, the reticle turns yellow. In this case, reeling while the reticle is yellow damages the line. To pause reeling, simply release the left mouse button.

Remember to keep your fishing bobber aligned with your aiming reticle, rather than where the fish seems to be. The game sees the bobber as the spot to reel in, even if tricky fish seems far away from where you want to reel.
