Resident Evil 4: Best Handguns To Upgrade

Das ist gut pistole ja?

Whenever you wish to clear a path in any game where there’s a sizeable amount of infected you would go for a shotgun, a double barrel if you’re feeling adventurous.

But that’s not Leon’s style in Resident Evil 4, it’s better seeing him with a knife. The man spent six years training with it after all, you still want to keep the locals from getting too close to your neck however so you might as well do it in style.

In this guide, we’ll show you which pistols are worth upgrading and which are worth keeping around in case of an emergency.

Best Handguns To Upgrade | Resident Evil 4

As the game transitions (again) from horror to action, it’s only natural that you’re given your arsenal to play with to help you progress.

Not all pistols are made equal though, some are nice to look at and would stay that way for a lifetime, and there are others you’d like to keep close company with until you get off the island.

SG-09 R

Big surprise, the starting pistol wins yet again! This is your best weapon to deal with trash mobs throughout the game, one clean shot to the head and a good roundhouse kick will save you a ton of ammo.

Upgrade it enough and you won’t even need to get close to your targets anymore! You should’ve already expected this as most starting pistols in Resident Evil are what you’ll be sticking with until the end until you get infinite ammunition at least.

Red9

With every firearm made, there’s always a funny story attached to it, especially for whoever got caught loading more ammunition than they should’ve with the Mauser- I mean, Red9!

The only joke that isn’t funny is how it’s no longer as accurate as it was in the original game, you can still rectify this by attaching a stock upgrade, however. At least they had the decency to remove the red dot sight this time, just doesn’t feel right when it comes to using old pieces of furniture.

You’ll enjoy using this iconic and easily recognizable pistol early on since it only uses handgun ammo. Better than the Matilda even since it uses the same amount of space as the Killer7.

Killer7

Used in two significant worldly conflicts and counting! You can unlock this later in the game by purchasing it from the Merchant, your best friend. Specifically around chapter 5.

Funny how it uses Magnum Ammo when you know very well yourself that it should be using handgun ammo instead, but that’s just how game balance works. Just don’t use it on the Ganados if you know what’s good for you.

Blacktail

If you’re more of a tactical LARPer, then the Blacktail should be perfect for you as it has the biggest ammo capacity along with the best accuracy a handgun has to offer. Not only that but it only eats a small amount of inventory space, which gives you more room for your bigger toys in return.

Upgrading this will even get you more DPS due to the high rate of fire it already has from the start, your hands will practically get confused every time you empty a magazine into a Ganado due to the low recoil!

Punisher

Do you smell waffles? I do! And so will everyone else who’ll be unfortunate enough to see the light coming out of the barrel.

The amount of money you’ll pour into this wonderful piece of Belgian tech will be worth it if you get the piece itself for free, well almost. You still have to collect the Blue Medallions and do the Pest Control quest to get them.

The laser sight is compatible due to the rails below the barrel so after upgrading both power and rate of fire you’ll end up hitting more targets than you should. Saving you a ton of handgun ammo in the process.

These are the pistols you shouldn’t be sleeping on, play around with them for fun or just commit yourself to a few for roleplaying purposes. Don’t forget, you’ll look cooler if you hold the pistol sideways!
