Should Hogwarts Legacy Have Been Multiplayer?

Finally, something us Potterheads have been looking forward to!

Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming action role-playing game set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
The game offers players the chance to explore the iconic Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and experience the magic of the wizarding world for themselves. With a rich and detailed world filled with spells, potions, and mythical creatures, Hogwarts Legacy is shaping up to be a thrilling and immersive experience for us Potterheads, but also a unique experience for those who are not yet familiar with J.K. Rowling’s universe.

Whether you’re a fan of the books or the movies, this game looks like it’s sure to transport you to a world of magic and adventure like never before.

There is still one important question though – should it have been a multiplayer game, or is it good that there aren’t any such elements officially announced yet? Here’s our take.

Should Hogwarts Legacy Have Been Multiplayer?

There are multiple perspectives to consider here, as there are benefits to both sides.

On the one hand, a multiplayer mode could have added an exciting new dimension to the game. Players could have teamed up with friends to explore the world of Hogwarts together, worked together to complete missions, and taken on challenges as a team.

Hogwarts Legacy – Wizard Duels

One of the features that the developer team has surely explored is dueling, wizard dueling to be precise. We get a great example of this in the movie, in the Chamber of Secrets to be precise. Harry and Malfoy fight it out between themselves, each on their respective ends of a long dueling platform.

Adding this into the game could be an excellent way for the team to introduce PvP to the player base, be it at the start or at a later date. As of right now, the latter seems like the likelier outcome, but the developers did add Dark Arts Battle Arena into the Deluxe Edition of the game. What this exactly means we are yet to find out, but many are speculating it could be an introduction to PvP duels.

Hogwarts Legacy – Quidditch

Another idea that the team could entertain is the idea of PvP games of Quidditch.

For diehard fans, the sport is certainly not unknown, but for those of you who are yet to explore the world of wizardry, Quidditch is a 7-man team game played on broomsticks, in which the goal is to score more points than the opposing team. There are a total of 4 positions – 3 Chasers, 2 Beaters, 1 Keeper, and 1 Seeker.

The role of Chasers is to get the ball into the opposing team’s hoops (a total of 3 on each side).

Beaters’ role is to protect their team and redirect balls called Bludgers – two bewitched Bludgers are a part of every game, with their role being of knocking players from both teams off their brooms.

The Keeper’s role is self-explanatory – as the name suggests, their role is to prevent the opposing team from scoring, so they mostly stay around the hoops, protecting them.

Seekers
have the most unique role in the game by far – their job is to wait for the Golden Snitch to reveal itself and then chase it down before the opposing team’s Seeker catches it. The Golden Snitch is infamous for its small size, immense speed, and maneuverability, which makes the Seekers’ role probably the most difficult of all positions.

Hogwarts Legacy – Should It Have Been Multiplayer?

We’ve gone through two interesting features that have the potential of being implemented as multiplayer elements of the game, but should the team have focused on this or is it good that they didn’t so far? Adding multiplayer options to the game surely have many benefits, but they also bring their own baggage to the table.

Balancing is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the cons of multiplayer modes. Historically, it has proven itself to be a very difficult task for developers to keep up with. It adds an immense amount of layers to the game, and with that, complications are bound to follow.

Be it in MMOs, MOBAs, or any other genre really, it has never been easy balancing kits, abilities, traits, perks, and all things alike. Many have proven that it can be done, but they’ve also shown how big of a challenge it really is.

Spells in duels are an example of what might be difficult to balance.

Another downside of multiplayer that’s worth noting is that it’d take focus (and funds) away from storytelling. Seeing as the game’s primary aim is to craft an enchanting and immersive world with an even better story, it’d be somewhat contradictory for them to turn their gaze towards multiplayer aspects of the game.

This does not mean that they can’t or shouldn’t ever do it, but perhaps they’re trying to make the campaign and the single-player mode in general as good as it can possibly be before adding multiplayer aspects to the game.

The combat looks thrilling and fun so far, multiplayer could spice it up even more!

In conclusion, multiplayer would be an amazing and thrilling part of the game, but there is still no confirmation that it will be implemented. Hopefully, what this could mean is that the team is prioritizing well and aren’t trying to accomplish too many things at once, which rarely leads to anything positive.

We’ll keep monitoring the development around the world of witchcraft and wizardry and we will, of course, keep you posted about any news and hot takes we stumble upon on our watch.
