Playing a spy in Team Fortress 2 is an art, it may just look like you’re backstabbing people but there’s a method in this madness of a game. Of course it’s an art to master all the classes in the game, but for those spy mains who want to master this one class you’ll have to learn the basics first. The spy can easily turn the tide of a match and can be a constant threat to the enemy team, or they can just spend the entire match crab walking which is infinitely funnier. In this guide we’ll teach you how to Disguise properly, the crab walking may be too advanced for some people.

Spy Guide: How To Disguise | Team Fortress 2

The spy has a lot of tools that can help them achieve their goals in the game, whether that goal is to win the game, get as many kills as you want or just be a general annoyance to the enemy team changes from player to player. Just remember that simple items like the disguise kits can actually have some deep mechanics.

Basics

The Disguise kit when used will let you disguise yourself on your class on the opposite team. If there’s an enemy playing as a demoman and you disguise as one, you’ll assume their looks, weapons, and cosmetics. If there’s no one playing demoman on the enemy team you’ll disguise as a generic demoman with the basic kit.

Disguising from no disguise takes longer than changing disguises from another disguise. Also know that you can press “B” to instantly disguise to the last one you picked. While disguised you can press B to switch your disguises’ weapon, if you’re holding a primary you’ll switch to the disguises’ primary.

When you’re going into a disguise a smoke effect will appear around your body, this can be detrimental if you’re going to cloak right after since you’ll be cloaked but the smoke effect will still stay until it finishes the animation. Remember to disguise after cloaking for the best effect.

Things to Remember

When disguised, you can still bump to enemies, which can be a problem. Normally players go through teammates, but if you suddenly can’t go through one then you’ll know it’s a spy.

Also remember that only the engineer that built the building can stand on them, their teammates can’t. So if you see a red soldier standing on a red sentry gun it’s probably a spy, so don’t do that.

Also there’s a chance that if you disguise as another player that same player can see you, and unless they’re some time traveler trying to do a paradox, they’ll assume you’re a spy.

Congratulations you now know the basics of using the disguise effectively as a spy in Team Fortress 2, now go out there and try to use it!
