Yup, you read that right. The highly acclaimed game Risk of Rain 2 just released its Seekers of the Storm DLC to a deafening flood of negative reviews on Steam. There’s a lot to unpack here, but we can keep this relatively short. Read on to learn all of the issues that people have with it right now!
Why Are There So Many Negative Reviews?
Long story short, the negative reviews have a lot to do with the acquisition of the Risk of Rain IP by none other than Gearbox. For those unaware, many people dreaded this change of ownership back then, and now we finally see firsthand why everybody was worried.
You see, Gearbox has a bit of a reputation for putting out half-baked games. I’ve been a hardcore fan of their Borderlands franchise since the very first one, and even I can’t deny that it’s been downhill for a while now.
Basically, the Seekers of the Storm DLC was the first bit of new content that wasn’t made by the previous developer, Hopoo Games. Needless to say, people have a lot of issues with it extending beyond the DLC itself.
First of all, there are a lot of bugs, both game-breaking and otherwise, that were introduced with the latest update that accompanied the DLC. If you ask me, the DLC itself is actually fine, but the update really soured its release to a lot of people.
There is a laundry list of problems that came with it, including very serious issues such as framerate affecting everything. Just look around community posts or test things out yourself.
Now I won’t claim to be some hardcore Eclipse grinder in this game, but there is a noticeable difference while locked at 144 FPS that has me questioning my own skills. Suddenly, things just feel so broken and weird due to having a high or low framerate.
For example, Loader’s abilities are heavily affected by framerate. I tried uncapping my framerate so that it reaches upwards to 300+ FPS. With that setup, Loader’s grapple just zooms at lightspeed. I then tried to cap it at 30 and suddenly it’s sluggish and equally weird.
So to sum it up, most of these negative reviews have to do with the new developers basically breaking the game in so many ways. It’s a shame, really, since the new content is actually pretty good.
Unfortunately, no matter how good the new survivors, enemy types, and environments are, they are completely overshadowed by the glaring technical issues of the latest update. You don’t even have to own the DLC to experience them.
There is still hope that they can turn things around, but for now, the game is a buggy mess. If you don’t own Seekers of the Storm but want to play Risk of Rain 2 without any issues, check out this guide on how to downpatch the game to save yourself from all the broken stuff.
