A wizard studies magic and can only be able to cast through the usage of spellbooks. A Sorcerer relies on whatever’s left of their bloodline along with metamagic to pull their own weight in a fight, but the question still stands. Which magic user is better in Baldur’s Gate 3?
We all know that they’re both made of paper and should always be in the back of the line, but let’s take a closer look at both classes. At the end of this guide, you’ll know just who to pick should you ever wish to spam magic missiles!
Which is Better, Wizard OR Sorcerer?
Wizards have more choices when it comes to spells, they do need to have them prepared first before actually casting it. A Sorcerer however, doesn’t need to prepare spells and can start blasting the moment things go awry. So that’s a good starting point when making your choice.
Now if you were playing this on tabletop, Wizards would’ve easily won given that they have the power to destabilize an economy using only an Illusion spell. Thankfully game balancing stepped in, so we still have a few other reasons to look at!
What are the Differences?
Playing as a Wizard will have you invest your ability points into Intelligence. A level 1 Wizard can have six spells and prepare three weak cantrips. As a Sorcerer, your bread and butter will be Charisma. You only have four cantrips and two spells at level 1. At the beginning, the Wizard is an easy choice, given how much variety you have with the extra spells.
The problem arises when you’re in battle and you forget to change your spells. You can change your prepared spells anytime outside of battle. That changes however, once everybody has their swords out. But a little bit of planning ahead can fix that.
Now here comes the Sorcerer who has Metamagic. This allows you to change the way your spells work. Think of it as if you were customizing your own spells, which you are. That’s something a normal Wizard can’t do. At level one you don’t have any of it, which is understandable.
But if you get to level two, you can start using your Sorcery Points to use Metamagic to protect your allies from your spells that require saving throws. You know, just in case you cast fireball by accident on a narrow corridor, and that’s just one example! You can’t learn new spells from books as a Sorcerer though. Once you get to level two, you can only chose one more spell and forget what you don’t need when choosing new ones.
So to answer your question, it’s better to play as a Sorcerer in Baldur’s Gate 3, downsides and all. If you want more spells, go for the Wizard. If you want your spells to be more powerful, choose the Sorcerer. Not only that but having a character with a ton of charisma will also give a huge advantage to your game. Think about that the next time you make use of persuasion, intimidation, or deception!
