Paladins in Dungeons and Dragons and other similar games can be a limiting in some cases. One of my very first campaigns had a Paladin. We all had to skirt around his ideals to get things done. What if they disregard those ideals? In Baldur’s Gate 3, as a Paladin, you’re bound to follow your Oaths. But you can also break them if you want. What happens if you do break them?

In this guide, we’ll show you how to break your Oath, what happens when you do and what are the benefits of it. Now, let’s see if we can’t break a few rules, I’m sure the gods aren’t watching!

What Happens If You Break Your Oath And Become An Oathbreaker Paladin?

When you pick a Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s not all just casting smite every second. There are other spells too you know! It is fun though seeing those big numbers go up and your enemies go down. Not to mention the fact that you can heal your allies as well. This makes the class a great one for those who like swinging weapons and using magic. It all comes with a cost though; you’ll have to follow your Oaths.

Depending on what kind of Paladin you are, your oaths should be easy or difficult to keep. But one thing remains easy for all of them. It’s easy to break your Oath.

If you break your Oath, you can no longer use any Channel Divinity Abilities. Not only that but the moment your Oath is broken, you’ll have a little talk with the Oathbreaker Knight shown below.

There are many ways for you to break your Oath, the most common way is to kill the innocent. If you want to easily break your Oath at the start then the fastest way is to go to Lae’zel when the ship crashes. There, two Tieflings would have captured her, kill the two Tieflings unprovoked and you’ll break your Oath for any Paladin.

The Oathbreaker Knight will say that you’ll be able to talk to him once a new day comes. Once you go to your camp and do a Long Rest, the Oathbreaker Knight will be there. You can then talk to him and turn yourself into an Oathbreaker Paladin.

Paladins usually have the power to turn and destroy Undead. The Oathbreaker Paladins on the other hand can control the undead. Along with that, you’ll get more spells that deal Necrotic Damage.

Contrary to popular belief, being an Oathbreaker Paladin doesn’t stick you to an evil playthrough. The Oathbreaker Knight himself served a corrupt and evil lord and he killed him thus he became the first Oathbreaker. He explains it himself that the powers you gain from being an Oathbreaker can be used for good or evil. It’s ultimately the player’s choice on which path they’ll take.

That’s what happens if you break your Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3. Now, go out there and try it yourself! Now that you know how to do that go check out our guide on how to respec or hire custom characters if you haven’t already!
