Acquiring a new ability in games can vary a lot. Some games give it to you for free with the right levels, while others you’ll need to find it or have an element of RNG. In Star Ocean The Second Story R, there are a few abilities that are both at the whims of RNG and you’ll need to do some grinding as well. That ability is Pickpocketing, and you can get it pretty early on before Kurik.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock the Pickpocketing ability in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Now, let’s see what we’ll need to do to get this one.
How To Unlock Pickpocketing Early | Before Kurik
First off, we’ll need to pray to the RNG gods. That’s because at the start of the game the characters are given random talents.
The talent we need is for Claude and it has to be the Nimble Fingers talent. If you don’t get the talent, then create a new game.
You can check your talents when you get to Arlia Village in the starting parts of the game. That’s around 2 minutes of gameplay if you skip all of the cutscenes.

After you obtain the Nimble Fingers Talent, you’ll then need to the party menu. From there, go to the Improve menu and then IC/Specialty Skills.
Once you’re there, go and learn “Poker Face” and “Courage” which will need 20 SP each. Then, after you have those two skills, you’ll get the Pickpocketing Specialty.
Now, you’ll need to progress the story until you reach the city of Harley. From there, you can go to the Antique Shop “The Sunken Vessel.” When you get there, you can then buy the Thief’s Glove for 40,000 FOL.
NOTE: If you need cash for the gloves, you can upgrade the Determination skill for each character. This will lower the SP needed for each skill. You can then upgrade Purity to get free FOL.
Finally, you’ll need to go to the IC/Specialty Menu and select the Pickpocketing Skill. You can then toggle it on and use the skill!
You can pickpocket from an NPC 3 times and can increase your chances with the Poker Face and Courage skills. Just remember that there’s a chance to lower your party member’s friendship every time you do it!
That’s how you can unlock the Pickpocketing skill early in Star Ocean The Second Story R. Now, go out there and pickpocket away!
