Modern Warfare 2: How Does Ranked Play Work | SR, Divisions & Rewards

It’s been a few months since Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare 2, one of the most hyped releases they’ve had within the Call of Duty franchise in a long time.

Since then, players have had their fair share of fun, practice, experimentation, bug exploration (and exploitation), and things alike. Some like it, some hate it, some have remained neutral; all of us, however, have been looking forward to Season 2.

The wait is over though!

On the 15th of February, Modern Warfare’s Season 2 was finally released.

Modern Warfare 2: How Does Ranked Play work | Ranks

It’s important to note that Ranks are completely separated from Skill Divisions (explained below); they are in no way connected. Just like Prestige, Ranks will remain with you throughout the course of the game, not resetting between Seasons like Divisions will.

In order to increase your Rank, you’ll have to win. As simple as that!

Each win rewards you with 1 Star, and each star counts as progress towards the next Rank. For every 5 Ranks, the badge that represents Rank will change.

It’s similar to the way Prestige badges change as your progress, except in the case of Ranks it will be various creatures that rotate instead of Prestige skulls.

Below are a few examples of what those badges are going to look like, with the first badge being that of a golden snake (Rank 5), and the highest one being that of a golden dragon (Rank 50).

Looks like the snake ends up growing legs, wings, and a tail!

Skill Divisions

Every player will start at the lowest possible Division (Bronze), and there aren’t going to be any provisional games to give some a better start than others.

After a season ends, your Division is going to be reset, but not entirely – everyone will drop to the first tier of the Division under their current one.

For example: if you finish in Gold 3, you’re going to start off the next season in Silver 1.

A detailed order of Divisions and the SR it takes for each one is shown below.

  • Bronze – Starting Division
  • Silver – 900 SR
  • Gold – 2,100 SR
  • Platinum – 3,600 SR
  • Diamond – 5,400 SR
  • Crimson – 7,500 SR
  • Iridescent – 10,000 SR
  • Top 250 – 10,000+ SR

Skill Rating

Skill Rating, often referred to as SR, is the basic unit of measurement that essentially decides your Skill Division. The better you and your team perform in a match (assuming you win), the more SR you’ll be rewarded with.

The more SR you have, the higher your division is going to be.

Everything from personal kill & assist counts to your team’s overall performance is taken into consideration when calculating SR gains or losses.

If your team performs well and you do as well but you still end up losing, you may lose less if your overall team performance was very positive.

Rewards are something I’m sure many of you have been looking forward to while reading, so let’s get into it! There are some really nice ones if you ask me, they did a good job here.

  • Rank 40: Pro Issue Combat Knife Weapon Blueprint

  • Iridescent: ‘Season 2 Iridescent’ Weapon Charm, Emblem, and Calling Card
  • Top 250: ‘Season 2 Top 250’ Weapon Charm, Emblem, and Calling Card

As an extra reward, the player who holds the 1st place on the Top 250 Leaderboard at the end of the season is going to get a unique, one-of-a-kind Calling Card and Emblem, giving that player “the ultimate bragging rights” (CoD team’s words).

Additional information that you may find useful (from CoD’s official patch notes):

  • Bronze -> Platinum: Can party up without any restrictions
  • Diamond: Can party within 2 Skill Divisions
  • Iridescent (Including Top 250) & Crimson: Can party with players within 1 Skill Division
  • SR Forgiveness: If a player disconnects or quits in the middle of the match, all team members outside of that player’s party will not lose ANY SR.
  • Professional Conduct Only: Friendly Fire is enabled in Ranked Play per CDL rules.
Repeated Friendly Fire will result in players being kicked from games and receiving penalties and suspensions.
