One thing that Larian Studios has done with their games is Origin Characters. This is their unique way of showing players the unique companions you can meet in their games in a deeper level. In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can play as Origin Characters instead of a Custom one and that can bring unique and extra challenges and stories to your playthrough.

We’ll show you how Origin Character works in the game and how that effects your playthrough. We’ll also show you all of the planned Origin Characters and what makes them stand out! Now, let’s see who these characters are!

Everything You Need To Know About Origin Characters

If you’ve played the previous Larian Studios game Divinity Original Sin, you should know that there are companions you can meet in the game. They have their own backstories that custom characters can’t have as well as their own story bits and cinematics. You can also play as these characters yourself and that often gives you unique ways of going through the game.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s mainly a Dungeons and Dragons game. For players of DnD, it is second nature to make your own custom character and make them as deep as you want them to be. Sadly, we can’t really do that in a video game, but we can get pretty close with the Origin Characters!

Origin Characters are the companions you’d normally recruit when you play a custom character. The thing is you can play as these characters and see the game through their story and experiences. Playing an Origin Character will give you extra and unique gameplay options as well as extra cutscenes and story.

There are multiple origin characters you can choose from at the start of the game. Each on of them have their own pre-set backgrounds, but don’t worry you can still customize some aspects of them. This can include choosing their spells or allocating stats.

Playing an origin character will give you extra missions and goals to work towards to as these characters have their own wants. It’s a great way to jump into the game without worrying about a custom character or if you just want to learn more about the companions you can find.

That’s how Origin characters work in Baldur’s Gate 3. Now that you know how origin characters work, go check out our guide on what the best races are for Warlocks if you want a custom character!
