Starfield is a world bristling with exploration, and quests! There are many quests in the behemoth of a universe that Bethesda have created with Starfield. It is only natural that you get lost during some of these, especially with the various options and pathways at your disposal. Additionally, some objectives are not always clear as there are not enough details mentioned.

In this guide, we will explain how you can fix the comms computer in Starfield. This is an objective that appears during the Back to Vectera questline. This quest enables you to return to the mining outpost on Vectera, and meet some familiar faces. Let’s dive into how this mission works.

Fix The Comms Computer

The quest starts with you having to go through some dialogue, investigation and looking around. Furthermore, once you fix the comms computer, the quest further progresses with information that you find from the comms computer. Here is an overview of the steps that will go into fixing the computer:

  1. Start by going to the Argos Extractors Mining Outpost on Vectera.
  2. Talk to Lin.
  3. Investigate the Comms Computer.
  4. Obtain 3 Power Cells from the area.
  5. Insert the power cells into the power receptacles and fix the comms computer.

Detailed Breakdown

You’ll want to start this quest by opening up your starmap and traveling to Vectera in the Narion system. Specifically, this quest will begin at the Argos Extractors Mining Facility where you will be returning to. This is the same area where you had your first meeting with the Artifact and Barrett. The purpose of this quest is to check in on your old mining crew and see how things are holding up. However, as you will find out when you arrive, things aren’t going smoothly.

Once you arrive, you will see a familiar face in the form of Lin standing right in front of you. Go up and talk to her, going through the various dialogue options that pop up. She will explain to you how pirates launched an attack on the mining facility, killing some of the crew and capturing others. The captured people include Barrett and Heller. At the end, she will mention how the pirates have damaged the comms computer, which makes locating them a useless venture. Luckily, you are up to the task!

Investigate the Comms Computer

Once the conversation is concluded, you can go and investigate the comms computer. This will be located in the first building to the right. This building will have a bright orange door at the front. Enter the building and make your way through until you reach another bright orange door. On entering, you will see some power receptacles on the right, and a smaller room. We will deal with the power receptacles later. You will want to enter the smaller room but will find that it is locked. However, this can easily be opened with a Digipick as it is of Novice Security Level. After you’ve unlocked it, enter the room and the comms computer will be in front of you. Interact with the computer and select the Look for a Power Source option.

You will be greeted with a prompt that mentions auxiliary power banks in the next room which use standard Power Cells. These power banks are the power receptacles that you saw when you entered through the second bright orange door. When you click next, your objective will update mentioning that you need to Obtain 3 Power Cells. These are the very power cells which you will use to fix the comms computer

Obtain 3 Power Cells Objective Update

Obtain 3 Power Cells

The first power cell can be located by exiting the building and going in the same outdoor space where you spoke to Lin. As you walk towards Lin, you will notice that there is a large black robot sitting nearby. Approach this robot and examine it. A description will appear which mentions that this is a loading robot which was used as cover during the firefight that occurred when the pirates attacked. You will see that there is an option to check for power cells. Clicking this option will indeed allow you to obtain a power cell. It is safe to assume that the robot will not be using it anytime soon.

The next power cell can be obtained from an unlikely source, which is Lin herself! You will find her walking around and examining her gear that she is packing only a few feet away. Interact with her as she complains about the mess and select the option where you ask her if she has a power cell. She will indeed have one and give it to you happily, as she will not have any more use for them anymore. Only one more to go!

The last power cell can be located in the identical building, across the one which has the comms computer. Enter this building and walk on right through the plastic partition. You will find yourself in a wide room with a circular central zone. Walk around the left side of this zone and you will notice a screen with a large skeleton displayed on it. This is the MedBench and interacting with it will remind me of your previous encounter with the Artifact. Select the Search for Power Cells option and this will allow you to pry out a power cell. Your collection is now complete!

Insert Power Cells

Now that you have all the power cells, it is time to make your way back to the room with power receptacles. Approach each of them one by one and insert the power cells. You will notice that the color of the power banks will change to blue from yellow, indicating they are powered up.

And that’s it! Placing all power cells inside the power receptacles will fix the comms computer. Now, you can make your way back to the comms computer and resume the Back To Vectera quest. Good luck and we wish you success in finding Barrett!
