The new God of War game is out and it’s called God of War Ragnarok! The game released only a few days ago and it already has overwhelmingly positive reviews from players who are enjoying the continuation of Kratos’ story. The game features a more open world approach to gameplay where there’s tons of stuff you can do around the world. The developers are also expanding on the Norse Mythology lore that they’re using, adding in more characters from folklore for you to meet. There are also quests in the game and in this guide we’ll show you how to do the Weight of Chains.
The Weight of Chains Guide In God Of War Ragnarok
For obvious reasons this article will contain spoilers. At the northern part of Svartalfheim is an island called the Lyngbakr Islands. It looks like an island but it’s actually not, it’s a giant whale, the biggest whale in Norse mythology named Lyngbakr.
In the game’s lore, Odin chained the whale there to harvest oil to light up his lamps, Mimir suggests Kratos free the thing and that’s what the Weight of Chain quest is.
The quest starts when you dock onto the island. Head to the right, breaking some rocks and enemies along the way. To the right edge is another set of rocks you can destroy and you’ll need to scale the cliff face at the side. Once you’re on top of solid ground again you’ll see some enemies, and a floor that has blue markings on it. There’s a lift mechanism at the side the controls on the same place you are.
Interact with the controls making sure the lift is at the bottom and use your axe to freeze the gears to keep the lift in place. Now go to the side again and get yourself on top of the lift. Recall your axe while on the lift and it’ll lift you up, surprise. Now go use the height to jump into floor with the blue markings.
I don’t know why Kratos couldn’t just stomp on the ground really hard, but anyway. When you get down there there’s going to be a tough enemy so keep that in mind and get ready for a fight. Inside is also a chest that you need to open to get a key. Now go back to your ship and head south to the shore.
Once on the shore go to the right and climb up the wall and onto the tower. There you’ll see a gate that’s locked, good thing you have the key. Once through the door you’ll see a drum, interact with it to wake up the island.
Now that the big fish is woken up we’ll need to unchain it. Go back to the boat and head towards the center of the fish island, or island fish. There you’ll find a place to dock, climb up and you’ll fight some enemies.
Facing north towards the gate go right and you’ll see a bunch of rocks you can blow up. Behind the rocks is one of the chains and you’ll need to interact with it to break it. The big fish will then raise its fins revealing another chain, you’ll need to break it that as well so throw a weapon onto it.
One chain down, more to go. Go back to where you came from and head southwest where you’ll need to jump a gap. There you’ll find some enemies, clear the area first. Near where the enemies were, facing east, is a chain. Go climb up the chain. Continue heading east then once you jump over a big gap, go north where there’s more enemies.
To the north is a chain you can go down, once down look west to see another chain. Same story, break it and break the chain under its fin. This will break some rocks revealing an enemy spawn, break it and it will reveal a pot of explosives. Take one and throw it at the pile of rocks to the north to clear it. Then take another one and go there to throw it at some rocks down south east.
This will unlock a new place to dock. Head back where you came, you can interact with the gate to open it and continue south to your boat. Now use the boat to go to the new area. Once on the new dock, climb up and you’ll see more enemies. Now go east and you’ll find another chain to break.
From this view you can’t really see the other chain holding its tail, so use the zipline next to you to get a better angle.
Now that the whale is free it’ll…stay there. Mimir will be confused and tell you to go to it face to face. Once you go there the quest will be complete.
