Starfield – Cover System Explained

How Not to Get Shot 101.

Starfield, like many other Bethesda titles, features combat. You can’t have a Bethesda game without it. The Elder Scrolls games have it, the Fallout games have it, and now Starfield has it. Starfield’s combat involves a heavy focus on guns with some melee weapons sprinkled to the side. Meaning, you will find yourself using guns more unless you run out of ammo for your guns.

Which also means your enemies will be shooting at you too. So, what do you do when that happens? You take cover. But how? In this guide, I will show you how the cover system works in Starfield.

Cover System Explained

The cover system isn’t really explained during the tutorial, so it’s completely normal if you didn’t know about it. Having been playing the game for a while now, it only took me around 12 hours into my playthrough to find out about it.

Basically, to get into cover, you will need to stand behind something. Once you do, you will know that you’re in cover when your gun isn’t pointed forward anymore.

When the gun is down, all you have to do is hold down the aim button to move around the corner and aim your gun. This can be done whether you’re crouching or not, as long as you are standing behind something and you are near a corner.

You can also aim over a cover like a short wall. Simply crouch behind the short wall and your gun will be down once again.

Then to aim, you will have to hold down the aim button again. Take note that some users are reporting that they are not able to aim over a short wall unless they are moving forward.

So, it’s possible that there is a bug right now that prevents players from aiming over a short wall without having to move. If that’s the case, we will have to wait for a patch that will fix that issue.
