LOTR: Return to Moria: How To Remove Purple Mist

And you thought the green ones were bad.

Lord Of The Rings Return To Moria Purple Mist

You’ll eventually see more dangers the further you go down the mines in The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria. And the more you go down, the more you’ll have to force yourself to face these dangers head on instead of just circling around and finding a different route.

One of these dangers will be the purple mist or shadow. If you ever come into contact with the noxious Grimace gas, you’ll start to take in damage until you pass out permanently. Read the rest of the guide below if you want to know how to clear a path and keep the adventure going!

How To Remove Purple Mist

There’s a total of three ways to get rid of the fog. You can find all of these in Durin’s Legacy. These methods will include: Rebuilding Durin’s Lamps, Activating Durin’s Monuments, and Reforging Durin’s Axe.

Durin’s Lamps will be the first method that you will gain access to. You’ll be able to find these lamps early on in the game and will require Sun-stone and True-Quartz. Other materials will include Adamant and Khazad Steel Ingots.

Another way of unlocking the recipe for Durin’s lamp will be to rebuild the Durin Statue in Baranzibar. This will unlock the lamp, allowing you to place it anywhere you like.

Activating Durin’s Damaged Monuments

The first Durin monument you’ll see will be in the Lower Deeps right next to the Secret Tomb of Kings.

You’ll have to sing a song in order to activate it and clear the purple fog nearby. This will also give you the “Undaunted” buff and will remove any shadow-curse that plagues you.

Singing a song to the other statues will grant you the same buff as well. Just don’t expect the same result for the smaller ones.

Those will only give you recipes for your tools, which can still be helpful at times.

Fix Durin’s Axe

Durin’s Axe will grant you passage through the Purple Mist whenever you please. It’s also the most difficult item to obtain in the game. In order to put the axe together, you’ll need five fragments of Durin’s Axe.

The first fragment will be in the Western Halls Westgate Area. You can find a building here in the back that has a staircase going up. The fragment can be found on the second floor.

The clue to the second fragment is inside Loni’s Akhfur Chest and will lead you to Orc Town. Clear the area and fight Bolgakh to get the fragment. You’ll find it on the same platform he’s standing on tucked away inside of a box.

Your next destination will take you to the Lower Deeps. The third fragment will be waiting inside of a cavern. Fight the troll for control of the room and you’ll find the fragment in a box in the back.

Dwarrowdelf is the next area you need to investigate. A little bit of platforming will be needed while you’re exploring Darkness of Night Falls. Make sure you have some materials with you to make it across the room.

Don’t leave Dwarrowdelf just yet! The last fragment of Durin’s Axe will be in The Desolation, the area destroyed by the Balrog himself.

Go to the Orctown and defeat the warchief to get the last piece. You’ll find it near the campfire, no need to jump on the second platform this time.
