The New Best Space Sim?! – Cosmoteer Starship Architect & Commander Review
Cosmoteer: Spaceship Architect & Commander does a good job of putting the final frontier in your hands and giving you the tools you need to explore and grow your new starship business.
In Cosmoteer, it’s up to you to build and expand your starship before you set off in search of treasure and fame. Each new playthrough gives you the choice between two game modes: Career and Creative.
To better understand what this game has going for it, whether good or bad, we will divide this review into 2 sections – Pros and Cons.
Pros
Let’s start off with the good things this game has going for itself.
Designing Freedom
It’s not hard sci-fi, and you don’t need a mechanical engineering diploma to play (unlike Stormworks), but it’s complicated enough that it’s fun to play around with designs and systems.
And talking about the designs, you can go bonkers with the options that it has. Whatever you have seen in Star Wars or some Sci-fi series and movies you will be able to build it here. Not only that, you will have full control of how it looks as well as its functions.
The workers inside will be controlled by you and this determines which part of the ship will be stronger and much better. Overall this aspect of the game will give you probably hundreds of hours to be playing this game and never getting tired of it. A very big positive about this game!
Rewarding Systems
The main loop of gameplay in Cosmoteer is to gather resources, complete bounties, earn credits, and then build up your ship. Once you will get through the tutorials, you will quickly get hooked by its simple but effective systems.
Each of the game’s systems feels like it has a purpose and gives you something back. I never felt like I didn’t know what to do next because I was always attempting to ensure my systems were functioning well and my resources were full and in the right place.
Balanced Resources
These types of games usually struggle with grinding for resources. Well, that isn’t the case in Cosmoteer Starship Architect & Commander.
You can’t say enough good things about how well Cosmoteer handles its resources. It’s fine-tuned and well-balanced. As you might expect, adding parts to your ship uses up resources, which can make it harder for your ship to do other things.
This means that the game is all about finding the right balance between both what you want to do and the correct approach to do it.
Career Mode
The game’s “career mode” lets you move up in a good way. It feels so good to move on from the starter ship and build something that can stand on its own. Career mode can also be played with other people, which works really well.
Most career missions involve killing pirates, delivering things (like ore), or going on an adventure. There are also mining, manufacturing, and salvaging, and we’re sure we’re forgetting a few more.
Price
For all the things that this game has going for it, it feels as though it is a steal for how low the price is. On top of all that you will be getting lots of new functions and things with each update that is yet to come, according to the developers of the game.
Cons
How about the bad side of things?
Grind And Loop
You will be mostly doing the same things over and over again, albeit, they are a ton of things that you can do. Still, players have noticed that the work missions will be repeating after a while and you will be doing the same things over and over again.
It is still a brand-new game and the developers have stated that they are working on adding a bunch of new things that you will be able to experience.
2D
Although for many this won’t be an issue at all, still, because it is in 2D it will be fairly limited in terms of how many varieties of battles you can have.
The game is only in two dimensions, which is pretty bad when you’re dealing with space and ships. But where the game used to be very limited because weapons had to be on the front, sides, or back of your ship, there are now weapons that work even when they are in the middle of your ship.
Still, in 2D, you can build almost any ship from any sci-fi universe, with a few exceptions: you won’t be able to make a Death Star, and Warhammer 40k ships are probably too tall to copy.
Overall & Rating
Overall Cosmoteer Starship will give you tons of hours of tinkering and figuring out what is the best prototype of a spaceship. If you are a fan of space and Sci-fi this game will make you addicted to it in the first couple of hours of you playing it.
Cosmoteer Starship Architect & Commander Review: The New Best Space Sim?
Summary
Cosmoteer is a space sim that is surprisingly deep and fun. Its many systems work well together, and even if you don’t like the grinding gameplay loop, you will indeed enjoy the time you spend with it. Traveling is fun, fighting is easy to learn and fun to do and the future is bright. That is why we rate it a 4.1 out of 5.
Thank you very much for checking out our review of Cosmoteer Starship Architect & Commander. If you are on the fence and not sure whether to check out this game just give the Demo a try. We definitely recommend it though especially if you are a Sci-fi enthusiast.
