Dragon’s Dogma 2: How To Fix Guards Always Attacking

Stop attacking me, I didn’t do anything!

Dragon’s Dogma 2 seems to have had quite a rough launch with all sorts of performance issues and bugs being reported by players. Many of these problems have been quite frustrating and continue to spoil the experience. For example, there is an issue where you are unable to do damage – for which we have a fix!

One such problem that a lot of players have been facing is guards always attacking players for seemingly no reason. This seems to be caused mostly during or after The Caged Magistrate quest. In this guide, we will show you how you can fix this issue and calm down the guards. Let’s get into it!

How To Fix Guards Always Attacking

To fix the issue with the guards always attacking you in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you’ll need to try out the following things:

  • Use a disguise when you are around the guards during The Caged Magistrate quest
  • Leave the area for 3-4 days by resting at an Inn
  • Make sure that you have your weapon sheathed around guards
  • Do not attack the guards or let your pawns attack them back.

As you progress through the game, you’ll need Dragon Crystals to upgrade yourself. Check out our Best Way to Get Dragon Crystals guide for more information!

The Caged Magistrate Problems

If you’re facing the problem of guards constantly attacking you in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the issue is most likely linked to The Caged Magistrate quest. You get this quest when you bring up the Magistrate when talking to Brant.

As part of the quest, you will have to meet the Magistrate who is locked up in a dungeon at Vernworth Castle. He is under constant vigilance by guards – which is where the problem lies. The guards seem to react aggressively to anything you do.

And once the guards do get aggressive, they will seemingly attack you regardless of if you leave and come back later. So, we’ll look at some solutions that can fix this issue.

Leave the Area for 3-4 Days (Stay at Inn)

One solution that seems to fix the guards constantly attacking is leaving the area for a long time. It is likely that the guards are tied to some hidden bounty system in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

In this system, they will keep attacking you once you’ve attacked them back after they get aggressive with you.

When you’re in this situation where they seemingly won’t let you go, we recommend leaving the area for an extended amount of time.

Leave the area for 3-4 days and return. You can pass the time at the inn or doing some quests that are outside the Vernworth area.

When you return, you should find that the guards will not be attacking anymore. Their hidden bounty system will be reset. But, the question remains, how can you ensure that they do not start attacking you again?

Use the Marcher’s Armor Set

When you go to the Vernworth Castle at night, all the guards will get very aggressive and start attacking you. This is because the area is out of bounds at night. So, we recommend you visit during the day.

However, there is a way in which you can visit the area during night. You can do this with the Marcher’s Armor Set. You can purchase this at the Potion Shop in Dragon’s Dogma 2. However, there is also one lying around in a hidden place in Vernworth Castle.

We have the area marked for you in the Vernworth Castle area below.

When you go to this area, you’ll see a small tower area with some guards. Next to this tower, if you look closely, you should see a hole. There will be a ladder in this hole leading downwards.

Use the ladder to go down and you’ll find yourself in an abandoned area. There will be a chest at the end that will have the Marcher’s Armor Set

Wear this set and the guards should leave you alone when you are in the Vernworth Castle area at night. It will work as a great disguise!

Just make sure to avoid the Warden when you’re in the area. He will recognize you regardless and will get aggressive with you. You can recognize the Warden as the NPC that will have both the sword and shield equipped.

Keep Weapons Sheathed

Something that not a lot of players realize is that having your weapon out can actually be considered a crime by guards in certain areas. For example, guards will get aggressive when you have the weapon out in Vernworth Castle.

So, make sure that you keep your weapon sheathed at all times. You don’t want to give the sensitive guards in Dragon’s Dogma 2 more of a reason to attack you!

Command Pawn to Follow You (Avoid Attacking Guards Back)

Guards will typically get aggressive with you if you’ve committed a crime. At times, it will seem that they do it very unnecessarily.

In these cases, you should avoid attacking the guards back when they attack you. Attacking them back will prolong their aggressive period, and they will continue to attack you.

We understand it can be frustrating, but do not attack them back.

However, when you’re getting attacked, your pawns wil resort to protecting you by attacking the guards back. In this case, the guards will then keep attacking you too.

When this happens, you’ll need to command your pawns to follow you. Keep spamming the command and try to run away from the area. You should continue doing so until the guards have given up chasing you.

This should prevent the issue of them constantly attacking you.

That’s everything you need to know about fixing the issue with guards always attacking you in Dragon’s Dogma 2. We recommend that you try all the solutions outlined in this guide. For the most part, the issue is either a glitch or caused by the guards simply being too sensitive.

Another issue in the game is the Escort quests in the game being too tedious and boring. Check out our guide which shows you how you can use the Ferrystone to save yourself some time!
