If you can look past all the technical issues that came with the latest update of the game, Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm has some pretty neat new survivors to unlock and try out. As with all the other characters, they have alternative abilities that you can unlock by completing certain challenges. In this guide, we’ll quickly go through all of the new ones!

How to Unlock All 3 New Alternate Abilities

Similar to every other character in the game, you will have to unlock certain abilities by finishing a challenge specific to them. They’re actually really easy with certain tactics, so let’s look at each of them one by one!

Survivor #1. Seeker – Soul Spiral Ability

For the Seeker, you must complete the “Airborne Souls” challenge, which requires you to hit at least three enemies who are airborne with the third hit of Spirit Punch. For the uninitiated, this is the explosive part of the character’s basic attack, which occurs at every third shot.

There are a couple of ways to do this, actually. One of them is covered in this guide on how to unlock seeker’s alternate secondary ability. Below will be a quick summary of each.

Risk of Rain 2 seeker using the alternate ability

Method #1 – Artifact Cheese

For this method, you will need both the Artifact of Kin and Artifact of Swarms. With this setup, you just have to reset the first stage until the Artifact of Kin picks a flying enemy as the sole spawn of the map.

If you manage to get one, such as the lesser wisps, rush over to the teleporter and activate it to pump up their spawns. Be careful, as you will be doing this at level 1, and the last thing you need is 20 wisps or blind pests one shotting you.

Find a group of 3 or more and then start attacking away from them for the first two shots. Once you are on your third shot, run up close and fire at the group. If you land the hit, the challenge should be complete as the explosion will hit them all!

Method #2 – Black Hole Method

For this one, you will either need to get lucky or use the Artifact of Command to get yourself a Primordial Cube. Basically, you just want to use the cube at the air to pull up nearby enemies.

Mobs that are being sucked upwards by the cube’s ability count as “airborne” enemies. So, just like the previous method, you will want to very quickly whiff two shots and then land the final hit on the group being pulled by the black hole.

Soul Spiral

The Soul Spiral ability replaces the Unseen Hand secondary ability. Instead of a healing punch, you will gain the ability to create orbs all around your character. This deals a bit of damage on contact and provides the Seeker with some free barrier per hit.

Survivor #2. Chef – Yes, Chef! Ability

For the Chef, you will need to complete the “Barbecued Bison Recipe” challenge. This is probably the most annoying one to complete among the three, but also the most amusing as it is pretty thematically appropriate.

Basically, the objective is to kill ten Bighorn Bison in a specific manner. First, you need to hit them with Glaze special ability, and then you must finish them off with Sear.

You don’t have to do it all at once, so the hard part is actually just finding Bighorn Bison in the first place. To make your life a little easier, start a run with the Artifact of Swarms activated to double their spawns.

Just be mindful of your damage, as their health will be halved. You will know that a kill counted if they drop a healing item as a part of your passive ability.

Yes, Chef!

The Yes, Chef! ability replaces Glaze, and it will turn the next ability you use into a better version of that skill. This has a pretty long cooldown, but it will give you a handful of other options outside of simply glazing and searing enemies.

Survivor #3. False Son – Laser Burst Ability

Finally, for the False Son, you must complete the “Stare Them Down” challenge. This requires you to kill 15 enemies with a single cast of Laser of the Father. We have a guide on how to complete the Stare Them Down challenge, but here is a quick rundown:

First, you want to use the Artifact of Swarms and Artifact of Kin. With these two, you want the first stage to spawn enemies that are easy to lure and hopefully barely dangerous. Beetles or Lemurians come to mind.

Next, rush to the teleporter and activate it to start pumping up their spawns. Once you have a whole lot of them running at you, kite them until they are all clumped together.

Finally, just charge up your Laser of the Father ability and fire away. You have only a few seconds to get this done before the laser finishes channeling, so if you didn’t get the challenge completion notification, then start over.

It should be noted that they don’t have to die from the laser itself. This means that certain items can help speed the process up as long as they proc while Laser of the Father is channeling.

You can take the Artifact of Command for the run as well and get yourself some Gasoline or Ukuleles to whittle down large groups even faster. As long as you get 15 kills while the skill is being channeled, you should be fine.

Laser Burst

The Laser Burst ability is a more straightforward alternative to its counterpart. Instead of channeling a beam of energy, you will instead simply fire a piercing laser that deals a ton of damage. That’s all there is to it.

And that wraps up this guide, as there aren’t really any other extra abilities to get for the DLC characters. Now get out there and start experimenting with these new skills, assuming you don’t run into any of the horrible bugs in the latest update!
