Lethal Company: How Does Ghost Girl AI Work?

Ghost Girl is one of the many entities of horror that Lethal Company has to offer. Compared to the grotesque monsters we see in the game; Ghost Girl stands out in her red dress adorned with white polka dots. If we didn’t know better, players might think her one of the lower-level threats in the game.

What makes Ghost Girl so terrifying, however, is the fact that she targets one player at a time. This means that while she’s visible to you, no one else can see her, leaving you all alone to face this creature. Given all this, it brings up the question of how the Ghost Girl AI works. In this guide, we help answer the question: How does the Ghost Girl AI in Lethal Company work?

How Does The Ghost Girl AI Work?

Ghost Girl doesn’t immediately go for the kill. Instead, she takes her time to toy and haunt her target. She won’t be visible to others, including surveillance cameras, so if you see her in the corner of your screen, note that no one can warn you about her other than yourself.

Your Hidden FEAR Stat

What is the FEAR Stat? The first thing the Ghost Girl AI shuffles through when she goes for a hunt is the Insanity Level and Total Turn Amount of each player on the crew.

Insanity Level

A player’s Insanity Level is a number that slowly increases as the game progresses. This number increases on a scale mark multiplier and is determined by how long a player spends alone and how much time they spend in the darkness.

This is also affected by location, but don’t worry! If you’re with someone or talking to someone through the walkie-talkie, you gain Sanity.

Turn Amount

The Turn Amount is determined by how many times a player rotates their camera view. This means that every time you swivel your view to take peeks for threats, shake your mouse, or even so much as turn left and right, the game interprets it as panic.

How ghost girl works

Building The FEAR Stat

After determining which player has the highest Turn Amount and Insanity Level, Ghost Girl builds a FEAR stat for every player. This stat starts at a base level of 80. She then applies one of four cases to each player. The cases are as follows:

  • If a player has the highest Insanity Level= +50 Fear
  • If a player has the highest Turn Amount= +30 Fear
  • If the player has been critically injured (HP falls under 20) before= +10 Fear
  • If the player is holding an item worth more than 150 scrap at the start of the round = +30 Fear

A caveat to the last case is that there are very few items a player can hold at the start of the round worth that much. To avoid this, however, it’s best to just drop everything that isn’t the basic tools.

If you’re feeling a little mean, you can even trick your crewmate into holding the jetpack at the start of the game to inflate their FEAR stat.

Weighted RNG & How It Works

It isn’t automatic that the person with the highest FEAR stat will be chosen by the Ghost Girl AI. The code the game uses is standard Weighted RNG Code. This means that the higher a player’s FEAR stat, the higher the chance a player has of being chosen

To cut through the technicalities, here’s a breakdown of what the code does:

  1. The code adds together everyone’s FEAR stats.
  2. If the Total Fear is less than or equal to zero, it picks a random player instead.
  3. There’s a snippet of code that assigns a floating-point value between 0.0 and 1.0 to the variable num2, which will determine which player is selected to be haunted.
  4. If a player’s FEAR stat is greater than zero, it gets the average Fear and adds it to the total of averaged fears.
  5. If the total averaged fears is greater or equal to the random variable from number 3, it will select that player to haunt. If it isn’t, it will rerun until it can select a player.
    • Each time this happens, the second player will have a higher chance of being chosen when their FEAR AVERAGE is added.
  6. If the code fails to pick a player based on weighted RNG, it will pick a player at random.

Signs That You’ve Been Targeted

Here are the indicators that a player has been targeted by Ghost Girl:

  • Lights and/or Terminal flickering.
  • Giggling (sound) and heavy breathing.
  • Muffled hearing and affected vision.

Tips To Avoid Ghost Girl

Now that we know how the code picks targets, here are some tips that might help you avoid Ghost Girl’s wrath:

  • Drop all items at the start of the round.
  • (If you’re living by survival of the fittest) Make sure your friends are holding expensive items at the start of the round.
  • Don’t get critically injured.
  • Keep your Turn Amount score low.
  • Don’t host since their values are checked first. If the code rolls a low number, you’ll be selected.

Strategy

  • You can get Ghost Girl to temporarily disappear while you’re being haunted by approaching her. If you do this during a hunt, this will kill you, so time it right.
  • Teleporting players who are being approached by Ghost Girl will end her pursuit, but won’t change her target.
  • Do not attempt to hurt her as she doesn’t take any damage.

And that’s all you need to know about Ghost Girl and how she picks her targets. She’s a little more complicated than the other monsters in Lethal Company, but you can find comfort in the fact that she also seems to be the rarest enemy in the game.
