Lethal Company is a fantastic co-op horror game that, in all honesty, doesn’t feel like a horror game because you’re having so much fun with your friends.
You can go around planets and moons, collecting scraps for a greedy company so you get to keep both your job and your life, all while having fun with your friends.
But what happens when one day, the game just stops working? Some players have reported the game starting up on an infinite black screen.
Well don’t worry, because in this guide, I will be showing you how to fix the black screen on startup.
How To Fix Black Screen On Startup
Before we start, I would like to state right now that there is no concrete method on how to fix the black screen.
Many have stated that one method works, but others have stated that it doesn’t for them. The results will definitely vary for some PC’s, so it’s worth trying all of them out anyway.
Restart Your PC
One thing that every gamer does when a game doesn’t work, no matter if the game is on console or PC, they always do a restart.
A restart usually helps in pretty much restarting your PC so that whatever is causing Lethal Company from starting correctly and getting a black screen to stop running when the PC boots up again.
It’s a very basic fix that a lot of people use first.
Verify Game Files
If a restart doesn’t work, then it may have something to do with the game’s files. One might be corrupted or missing, which is usually the cause of games in general to stop working.
In order to fix that, we will need to verify the game files. Here’s how you can do that:
- Right click on Lethal Company on Steam
- Click on Properties
- Click on Installed Files
- Click on “Verify integrity of game files.”
Steam will then look through the game’s files and see what’s wrong. As the game is less than 1 gigabyte, it won’t take that long for Steam to sift through the files and find what’s wrong.
If Steam does find anything wrong, then it will automatically download new files to replace any that are corrupted or missing.
Launch Game From Installation Folder
Sometimes, Steam just has a hard time launching games. It is a launcher, after all. So if you think Steam is just preventing you from launching games, then you can just launch the exe application in the games installation folder instead.
It’s actually quite simple to do this. All you need to do is to find where your Steam games are installed, which is located in the (C:) drive by default (unless you installed it on another drive).
Then, go to the Lethal Company folder and you should find the Lethal Company application there. Double click on the application and the game will start from there instead of Steam.
Run The Game As Administrator
Another way to launch the game from the installation folder is by launching it as Administrator. Basically, this will give the game priority over most processes that are running in your PC.
It will also bypass any antivirus or firewall that maybe preventing the game from launching.
Delete Save Files
This one might not be something a lot of people won’t do, but it is proven to have worked for some people.
You will need to delete your save folder of Lethal Company from your My Games folder in Documents.
This will, of course, force you to start from the very beginning as you are deleting your progress. I do recommend you make a backup, though, in case this method doesn’t work.
Allow Game Through Windows Defender Firewall
While Windows Defender Firewall protects you well, it may be protecting you a little too well. It can sometimes block games like Lethal Company from launching correctly.
In order to let it through the firewall, you will need to do the following:
- Search Windows Defender Firewall in the Search bar
- Click on “Allow an app of feature through Windows Defender Firewall.”
- Click on “Change Settings”
- Scroll down and look for Lethal Company then click on the boxes for both Private and Public
Update Graphics Card
Updating your graphics card is another method to get Lethal Company working. Many have reported that the game works after updating their graphics card, so it is definitely worth a shot.
You can easily update your graphics card by looking up how to do so online, as updating graphics cards for AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA graphics cards are all different from each other.
Uninstall & Reinstall The Game
If all else fails, then a clean reinstall of the game can do wonders. Sometimes, verifying the game files won’t work and Steam won’t find anything wrong with it.
So, instead of wasting time looking for the one file that maybe causing it to stop working, you can just uninstall the game and reinstall it.
That’s all you need to know on how to fix the black screen on startup for Lethal Company. Did this guide help you find some solutions on how to fix the game? Let us know in the comments below.
