The First Descendant: Which Character to Pick?

The First Descendant features a diverse cast of customizable characters, each with their own unique playstyles and abilities. Every character has four active skills and one passive ability, and they all cater to different preferences. You start off with a choice of three characters, and if you’re wondering which of them you should pick, this guide is for you!

Which Character to Pick?

During the introduction stage, you’re given a choice of three characters: Viessa, Lepic, and Ajax. The three of them have very distinct playstyles, and you’re going to want to choose the one that you resonate with the most.

Take note that you can also unlock the rest later on, so don’t worry about locking yourself out of the other two once you’ve picked a starter character.

Viessa

The first option is Viessa, who has an ice-themed set of abilities. Not only does she have high shield recovery outside of combat, but her passive skill, Ice Sphere, can slow down enemies affected by her other abilities.

This effect stacks, and the speed reduction and duration both go up as you keep hitting enemies with skills. This eventually freezes enemies, essentially stopping them in their tracks.

In addition to inflicting slow on her enemies, most of her active skills inflict area of effect damage, making her a great choice for players who want to shred through groups of clumped up enemies.

Viessa is the ideal pick for players who like crowd control effects. She also has an additional ability, Frost Road, that grants her temporary extra movement speed and an energy shield, making her a decent pick for those who want to quickly run through the early levels.

Lepic

In the middle is Lepic, a DPS character who excels in dealing tons of both burst and sustained damage. He has fairly balanced stats and is a good fit for any playstyle.

He’s the ideal pick for beginners, as his kit is pretty straightforward and basically involves blowing enemies up.

His passive skill, Close Call, gives him a second chance whenever he receives fatal damage. Rather than dying, he instead temporarily becomes immune to any damage and recovers some of his health after a short amount of time.

Similar to Viessa, his abilities also deal area of effect damage. The main difference is that his abilities are more focused on pure damage. Rather than slowing enemies down, his Overclock skill adds a burn effect to his other abilities.

Lepic also has a Traction Grenade that pulls enemies together, and this synergizes well with his other skills as it leaves all affected targets vulnerable to his explosives.

Ajax

Finally, we have Ajax, who is very clearly the tank character. His entire kit is also very straightforward, as his abilities are mostly geared towards protecting yourself or your teammates by either blocking damage or shoving and stunning enemies that get too close.

His passive ability, Event Horizon, enhances his other skills when he has reached maximum Void Energy, which he accumulates by using his active abilities.

Ajax’s Void Walk allows him to jump into a crowd of enemies and stun all those around him, while his Expulsion ability knocks back anything within range. Both of these make him great for defending objectives or saving teammates who are getting overwhelmed.

His Orbit Barrier and Hyper Cube create shields that protect all of those behind them. The latter, when enhanced, even increases the damage of all allies inside the protective bubble.

Ajax is a great pick for players who prefer a more supportive role, though he surely won’t lag behind in terms of damage as well due to his crowd control skills.
