Dinkum: Farming, Raising Animals & Growing Fruit

Everything you need to know about raising animals, farming, and growing fruit in Dinkum!

If you’re unsure what to do next and you’re still early in your Dinkum journey, setting up a farm can be a good way to go. Planting and harvesting crops, raising animals and growing fruit can all be great next steps after you’ve caught some Butterflies, mined some Ores and chopped down Trees.

Farming, Raising Animals & Growing Fruit in Dinkum

We’re going to assume you already obtained all the pre-requisite licenses – Farming, Excavation, Handling (Level 1), Landscaping (Level 2)- these are all relatively simple and straight-forward, the game naturally leads you towards obtaining all of them.

Other requirements for the following activities are:

  • Hoe
  • Shovel
  • Seeds
  • Apples/Gum Nut (examples of Trees you can plant)

Dinkum Guide: Farming Crops

First off, you should buy Seeds, which you can do from Reyna, a gardening NPC that spawns in the Visitor plot in your Town.

You’re going to have to build John’s Store first, so he can vacate the Visitor’s spot and leave space for her to spawn – there’s a small chance for her to spawn every in-game day.

Once you’ve decided which Seeds you want to plant, your next step should be to equip your Hoe and till the soil, equip and then place the Seeds on top of the tilled soil and finally, water the Seeds.

Make sure to repeat the Watering process daily, as most types of crops are going to fail otherwise.

Something worth mentioning is that John and other Town inhabitants might water these for you, but you shouldn’t rely on them to do so as this part of the game’s completely random.

Dinkum Guide: Growing Fruit

By now, you’ve probably grown tired of foraging for fruit all over the island. If that’s the case, you’re probably going to look forward to setting up your own orchard!

To get started, you should figure out where you want to set this up as it can take up a bit of space because, unlike with Crops, you usually want to separate your Trees from each other (1 plot between should be enough).

Once you’ve a designated space for your orchard, start by digging out every other plot of land with your Shovel and then drop an Apple, for example, or a Gum Nut into the holes you dug out. Bury the holes with your Shovel by picking up Dirt and putting it down right over the Fruit you previously dropped.

The good thing about Trees is that they don’t require you to water them at all, so it’s totally hassle-free!

Dinkum Guide: Raising Animals

So you want to have a little chicken or two? I can’t blame you, who doesn’t?

We’re going to start off by allocating a space for these just like we did for the orchard, preferably smaller this time as the chicks don’t need as much space as Trees do.

What they do need however, unlike Trees, is an area surrounded by a fence – this is to avoid your animals becoming prey to a plethora of wildlife that populates the island alongside you and your Town.

You’re going to need to make a Bird Coop, and you’ll also want to buy an Animal Feeder along with some Animal Food. The last thing you’re going to need is the chick itself – all of these can be purchased from Irwin, who is an NPC with a chance to spawn in the Visitor plot, just like Reyna.

Once you have all those, place them all within your fenced area one by one and voilà – you are now a proud owner of an animal farm! You can choose to either make new ones every time you want to reinvest into your chicken business, or you can simply expand the already existing farm.

A quick tip about Animal Feeders: you can set up multiple Feeders in your farm, that way your chicks can have food for longer periods of time without you having to refill the Feeders every in-game day.
