Baldurs Gate 3: How to Get the Infernal Robe Without Killing Karlach

The devil is in the details.

Baldurs Gate 3 Rare Loot

One of the few things you may want to avoid on your second playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 is killing Karlach. But surely after 200 hours on your first campaign you’ve already grown as a person. That’s why this time we’re going push through with actually killing her.

We’re not doing this for fun or because you’re going to do a Dark urge run anyways. We’re doing this for the loot. Because Mizora actually rewards you with an Infernal Robe for doing the unthinkable. An Item I didn’t know that existed, but here we are anyways!

How to Get the Infernal Robe Without Killing Karlach

When you gather your party and do a long rest – assuming that you already have everyone in Act 1, Karlach and Wyll will have a little bit of a scuffle on their first night together.

The following night after that Mizora will give Wyll the horns for not making good on their deal. That is, of course, if you play the hero route.

This time however, we’re going to play a little game with the devil herself. Here’s a quick summary of what you need to do:

  1. Recruit Wyll.
  2. Kill Karlach with or without contempt.
  3. Let Wyll know that you killed Karlach.
  4. Resurrect Karlach.
  5. Add Wyll to your party and do a long rest.
  6. Get rewarded handsomely,
  7. Recruit Karlach.

This guide continues with a detailed walkthrough below!

Baldurs Gate 3 NPC Location

Detailed Walkthrough

Play through the first thirty minutes of the game (character creation excluded) and recruit some of the four origin characters you come across.

Make your way to the entrance of the Emerald Grove and let the cutscene playout to encounter Wyll. Win the fight and tell him to go to wait at your camp. You can find him next to the entrance or deeper into the grove training Tieflings.

At this point, Wyll would’ve already informed you of the devil Karlach’s whereabouts, or you learn about it through other means.

Either way, you’re going to have to journey to The Risen Road to encounter Karlach. Don’t talk to her, just do what needs to be done and return to your camp to let Wyll know she’s dead. Don’t worry, you’ll come back for whatever’s left of her in a bit.

You can double down on him doubting his actions if you’re playing as a Tiefling. Use whatever dialogue you find appropriate and return to Karlach’s Corpse. Use a scroll of Revivify on her and return to camp once more. Again, avoid talking to her, she’s “dead” remember?

Once you’re at the camp, recruit Wyll into your party. Follow up with a long rest and let the cutscene between him and Mizora play out. Finish that and Mizora will put on a new set of robes on Wyll without his consent.

Leave your camp on the next day and return to where you last encountered Karlach. The cutscene of her being a victim of the Blood War will play out.

This is what usually plays on the first night when you take a long rest with everyone. She won’t acknowledge the fact that you killed her as well even if she saw you in the previous encounter.

Baldurs Gate 3 Playable Characters Wyll And Karlach

Now everyone’s happy, you get to save Karlach and get a very rare piece of armor early on.  Is this an oversight from the Baldur’s Gate 3 team? Should you be concerned with how you just tricked a devil into giving you a reward? Maybe you’ll find out more the further you play into your new campaign.
