Playing a healer can turn off a lot of people who play MMORPGs but in Final Fantasy 14 healers can deal damage as well which makes them fun to play. Not only that but there are actually two types of healers in the game, your regular normal healer, and barrier healers. Scholar is one of the latter and in this Complete Beginners guide, we’ll show you how to play the Scholar!

Complete Beginners Guide To Scholar In FFXIV

The scholar is a barrier healer, which means it not only heals but also gives barriers as well. These barriers are reduced first when an allied is hit before their actual HP, so you can just think of it as another temporary HP pool.

Healing Skills

Here is a list of skills you’ll get for healing and what they actually do.

  • Level 4 – Physick – Your first healing skill, a single target healing with low cost
  • Level 30 – Adloquium – Single target shield. If you land a critical, it’ll give the target a larger barrier
  • Level 35 – Succor – An AOE shield, great for giving all your party members barriers
  • Level 56 – Deployment Tactics – Spreads your barrier to other party members
  • Level 58 – Emergency Tactics – When cast, the next Adloquium or Succor skill cast will heal instead of adding a barrier
  • Level 86 – Protraction – Increases maximum HP by 10% to yourself or a target as well as increases recovered HP from heals by 10%.
  • Level 90 – Expedient – Gives the Desperate Measures and Expedience buffs to yourself and all party members. The first reduces damage taken by 10% for 20 seconds while the second increases movement speed.

DPS Skills

In Final Fantasy, healers deal damage as well. In fact, healers who only do heal the entire time are considered bad healers since every damage counts. While the party is at high HP or is fighting trash mobs then it’s your job as the healer to deal some damage as well.

Here is a list of damage spells for you to use:

  • Level 1 – Ruin – Your basic damaging spell.
  • Level 2 – Bio – Damage over time spell that lasts for 30 seconds.
  • Level 38 – Ruin II – A separate but upgraded Ruin with her MP cost but no cast time.
  • Level 46 – Art of War – This is your AOE attack which centers around your character.
  • Level 54 – Broil – Similar to Ruin as a basic damaging spell.
  • Level 66 – Chain Strategem – Increase Critical Rate by 10% for you and your party on one target.

Aetherflow

A mechanic unique to Scholars, Aetherflow something you get at level 45. When cast it will give you 2000 MP and 3 stacks of Aetherflow. These can be used with a number of skills and abilities.

Here is a list of skills you can use Aetherflow with:

  • Level 45 – Energy Drain – Single target attack that does damage and absorbs HP.
  • Level 45 – Lustrate – Strong single target heal.
  • Level 50 – Sacred Soil – Places a bubble on the ground that lowers damage taken by 10% for anyone inside it. At level 78 it upgrades with a regen effect to allies and yourself.
  • Level 52 – Indomitability – Strong AOE heal.
  • Level 62 – Excogitation – Costs 1 Aetherflow and will give buff for 45 seconds. While having this buff and their HP falls to 50%, it’ll activate a strong heal, when the timer runs out it’ll heal them regardless.
  • Level 74 – Recitation – Makes your next Adloquium or Succor cast an automatic critical.

Fairy

Let’s not forget the other unique thing about scholars, they can get a fairy. You can summon either Eos or Selene with the majority of Scholar mains straight up saying that Eos is better. I’m sorry, Selene.

Here are the different skills your fairy can cast:

  • Level 1 – Embrace – Heals a random party member every 3 seconds.
  • Level 20 – Whispering Dawn – Gives regen to all nearby party members including yourself.
  • Level 40 – Fay Illumination – Increases healing potency by 10% for you and your party members. Also reduces magic damage by 5%.
  • Level 60 – Dissipation – De-summons your Fairy for 30 seconds giving you 3 Aetherflow. Also increases your healing potency by 20%.
  • Level 76 – Fey Blessing – Strong AOE heal

At level 70 you also unlock your Fairy Guage and the spell Aetherpact. The gauge increases by 10 every time you use one Aetherflow stack. You can then use Fey Union which will tether Fairy to your target giving them a very strong regen while draining the Fairy Guage by 10 for every couple of seconds.

At Level 80 you get the ability to Summon Seraph. When summoned she will replace your current Fairy and her Embrace spell will give Shield as well. The button to Summon Seraph will then change to 2 charges of Consolation, which is an AOE spell that give Shields as well.

And that’s all you need to know about the Scholar in this Complete Beginners Guide, now go out there and throw those heals and shields to your allies!
