In The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, Steel plays a crucial role in crafting weapons, but its significance goes beyond that. It’s essential for creating a Steel pickaxe, which grants access to the Mines of Moria. When you reach the Elven Quarter, you’ll notice that the tunnel leading to the mines is indestructible with your standard iron pickaxe.
This marks a significant turning point in the game when you’ll be mining numerous ores and minerals from the deposits within the mines. So, what exactly will you need to do to get Steel?
How To Get Steel
In order to produce Steel, you’ll need to craft it from a substantial amount of iron ore and coal. To be specific, three iron ore and three coal will yield one steel ingot.
Iron ore and coal can be found in abundance in the Westgate Zone, which is just before the Elven Quarter. You’ll also encounter Iron deposits within the Elven Quarter, particularly near the rivers.
Now that you have the materials/requirements, how will you able to make Steel?
Apparently, you won’t be able to make it at your own furnace until you repair the Forge. For that, you’ll have to make your way to The Great Forge of Narvi area.
Upon reaching the Forge of Narvi within the Elven Quarter, you’ll need to locate three components for its repair.
- The first two should be relatively close to the forge, and you’ll need torches to navigate in the darkness.
- The third component may pose more challenges, as it’s guarded by Hobgoblin enemies. You can either engage them in combat, using a shield to stun them, or attempt to sneak past them.
Once you’ve gathered the three components, you’ll need to carry the replacement pipe in the area and install it.

After fixing the forge, you should now be able to see and craft Steel Ingot as many as you want. Although one potential issue you might encounter is that the Steel ingots don’t appear initially.
To resolve this, craft one Steel ingot at your own furnace and then try again at the Forge. Remember, both furnaces offer the same crafting benefits, so there’s no advantage to crafting at the forge except for its central location.
You might even consider using this location as a temporary base, fortifying it against potential threats.
A noteworthy point is that the Forge can craft certain items that your personal forge cannot, which could be an incentive for making this area your base. However, it’s not a crucial decision.
That’s about it for obtaining steel in this zone in The Lord of The Rings: Return to Moria. As you progress and acquire Elven wood, you’ll unlock more recipes and be able to craft advanced armors and weapons. Further into the game, you’ll find Copper in the mines of Moria, allowing you to create even better gear! If you have questions or concerns, feel free to leave them in the comments section below.
