Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has a wide array of weapons for you to choose from. They aren’t all available for you to select for your loadout though.
In older Call of Duty games, weapons are unlocked once you level up your profile to a specific level, purchase them from the armory, or progress through the story. This time around, it’s quite different.
Understanding weapon progression and learning about the different weapon trees is very important since this is how you unlock a variety of weapons and customizations in the game.
We know it can be a bit daunting at first but in this guide, we will be explaining things much easier for you to understand and unlock different weapons and customizations in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
Guide on How to Unlock Weapons in COD Modern Warfare 2
There are 8 types of weapons you can choose from in your armory. These are Assault Rifles, Battle Rifles, Submachine Guns, Shotguns, Light Machine Guns, Marksman Rifles, Sniper Rifles, and Melee weapons.
Weapons are unlocked by reaching a specific level. One example of this is the STB 556 Assault Rifle. Once you reach level 41 then the weapon is unlocked automatically.
That seems straightforward enough but other weapons aren’t locked by level progression. And that’s where the confusion starts. This is where Weapon Progression and the weapon tree come in.
Weapon Progression
Weapon Progression is where you level up a specific type of weapon by adding attachments to them. In this example, we have the M4 Assault Rifle. Leveling up and attaching weapon mods on the weapon, will in turn level it up.
Leveling up a weapon will unlock other weapon platforms which you will have to level up also to unlock more weapon types.
Weapon Tree
Think of weapon trees as skill trees in RPG games. You can view the weapon tree via the weapon platform.
This shows you what level of progression you need to Unlock the next set of weapons and leveling those up will branch out to other weapons to Unlock.
Tips on How to Unlock Weapons
Here’s an easy tip on how to unlock the weapons you want. Go to the gunsmith and select the weapon you want. In this example, we want to Unlock the Vaznev-9K. Notice that to Unlock it, we need to level up the Kastov-74U to level 15.
To save yourself some time by checking all the weapon trees for the pre-requisite weapon to Unlock, look at the lower tab below the weapon name, it states that the Weapon Platform is of Kastovia make.
Tap or select it to take you to that Weapon Tree and level up the Kastov-74U to its proper level to Unlock the weapon you want.
Plan on the Weapons You Want to be Unlocked
Always check your weapon progression and weapon tree and level up weapons according to the type of weapons you specifically want to Unlock.
Spreading your levels across different weapons might sound good at first, but higher-tier weapons are more powerful so you might want to focus on unlocking those as fast as possible compared to outfitting a low-level weapon with augmentations and mods.
