The announcement and eventual release of Risk of Rain Returns came as a pleasant surprise to fans of the original, as it is a faithful remaster of the critically acclaimed roguelike from 2013. With its release comes both new and returning survivors that you can try out. Among these new additions is the Drifter. So, how do you unlock him?

How to Unlock Drifter

To unlock the Drifter, you will need to recycle six drones in a single playthrough. This is easier said than done, however, and there is a way to speed up this process a little more.

First up, you will need to have unlocked the Artifact of Command. This will allow you to choose which items you get from looting rather than having them be completely random.

To do this, you will need to get the Hive Cluster as your fourth stage. If you’re lucky, it should be on the upper right corner of the map, hidden behind disappearing vines that you have to platform across.

Without the Artifact of Command, you will require a lot of good RNG in order to get the Drifter. Now, with the artifact turned on in your run, you will want to immediately get a Drone Repair Kit.

This item will keep on summoning a unique drone that you can repeatedly recycle at a drone scrapper. This next step will require a lot of luck, as you are not guaranteed to find one in any given level.

Once you do manage to find a drone scrapper, clear the level first by activating the teleporter and fending off all the enemies and the boss that spawns.

Next, go back to the drone scrapper and repeatedly recycle the free drone that you get from the repair kit. After doing this six times, that’s pretty much it, you have now unlocked the Drifter!

Drifter’s Abilities

If you’re wondering what this new character’s abilities are, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick rundown of what he can do:

  • Blunt Force – The Drifter’s primary attack is a 3-hit combo that deals a lot of damage within a decent range. Has a chance to generate scrap with every hit.
  • Cleanup (Secondary fire) – Throws some of your scrap in the form of bouncing projectiles that deal a bit of damage each.
  • Scrap Cube (Secondary fire) – Throws a large cube at the cost of some scrap. This can be pushed or destroyed to deal damage to enemies.
  • Suffocate (Utility) – Hit enemies with your bag for a decent amount of damage and stun them for a bit. Can turn enemies into scrap if their HP is low enough.
  • Tornado Slam (Utility) – Spin around with your bag for your base amount of damage. This also makes you go faster and lowers your gravity.
  • Salvage (Special) – Temporarily spawn 4 items in exchange for a large amount of scrap.
  • Recycle (Special) – Reroll an item in exchange for a large amount of scrap.
