You must also have advanced enough to put abilities from other characters, namely to replace abilities between characters.
Unlock the eggshell abilities and put it on your rat and then talk to Ratbane, this is all you have to do.
After talking to Ratbane the added abilities will help you will survive the blow.
Basically, the more advanced skills you put in the rat the better, but in this case, you need the skills listed above.
