In Final Fantasy XIV, when you first start the game, you have to create your character. That’s a pretty tough thing to do, because you want your character to look perfect and you don’t know if or when you can change your character’s look again. But there’s a tougher choice after that; what server will you choose? The server you choose will be the server you stay in for as long as you use that character, which basically locks you to one server forever, until recently. This is possible because of the Data Center Travel.

With the recent 6.18 patch, you can now transfer to other servers and stay there for as long as you want. Before, this is not possible and was a heavily requested feature for quite some time. Now, you can bring your characters to other servers and stay there, or you can just look around and see what’s different by using Data Center Travel.
To start, you must first go to the character login menu and select the character you want. Then, click on Visit Another Data Center option. You will then receive a list of other Data Centers and Worlds you can visit. Click on one of the Data Centers and the game kick you out while it processes the transfer.
Once the process is complete, you can then start the game and select your character and experience the new worlds and people located in the Data Center. If you want to go back, all you have to do is repeat the process.
Bear in mind that you cannot travel to other Data Centers outside of your region. Let’s say, you’re from Europe or Japan. You can only transfer to other Data Centers located in that region, but never other regions like the North America Data Center.
There are also some restrictions when traveling to other Data Centers:
- Access your retainers.
- Access to legendary and unspoiled gathering nodes.
- Sell anything on the Market Board (but you can still purchase items there).
- Access the Moogle Delivery Service.
- Form or join a free company, and view free company information.
- Enter the housing lottery and purchase a housing plot or an apartment.
- Hold or attend Ceremonies of Eternal Bonding (in-game weddings).
- Enter Triple Triad and Lord of Vermillion tournaments, or buy Cactpot tickets at the Gold Saucer.
While Data Center Travel sounds great at a glance, the actual process just means you can visit, but not stay. You can play with your friends on that Data Center, but you have to eventually go back to your Data Center if you want to access all of the games features.
