It’s that time of the generation where PlayStation and Xbox release a upgraded version of their base controller. This usually comes before the inevitable mid generation update (so you better hope there’s a PlayStation 5 Pro around the corner). Here, we have PlayStation releasing the DualSense Edge, the upgraded version of the already incredible DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5. But what is the difference here? Because to the casual gamer, the controller looks the same. Well that’s why we’re here, to show you everything you need to know about the up and coming DualSense Edge.
Everything You Need To Know – DualSense Edge
Things You Need to Know
If you want to experience a new way to play your PlayStation 5 and its games, then the DualSense Edge is something you should keep an eye out for. However, what really is the DualSense Edge? We all know that it’s an upgrade to the base DualSense, but what are the changes that were made? Does it fix some problems that the original DualSense had?
Price and Release Date
For starters, let’s talk about the price and release date. If you want to get a DualSense Edge, you will have to wait until January 26, 2023 to get one, as that is its release date. However, you can pre order one directly from Sony’s store. Right now, there is no way to pre order from other stores like Amazon, so you’ll have to go through their official website to do so.
But what about the price? Well, you might want to sit down for this, because the DualSense Edge costs $199.99 in the US, €239.99 in Europe, and £209.99 in the UK. Mind you, that’s half the price of a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is $20 dollars cheaper at $179.99.
Difference from the Standard DualSense
When looking at the DualSense Edge, you might think “okay, it looks a little different”, and you would be right. Instead of a white touchpad, there’s a black touchpad. Not only that, but the buttons have been changed from white to black as well, even the black that’s around the sticks are darker. Essentially, the DualSense Edge has a bit of changes made to the colorways.
If you take a good look at the controller though, you can see that under the thumbsticks, there are two toggles. They let you access quick controls like to control the volume or change button profiles, all while still playing. You can also see that the thumbsticks itself look detachable, because they are. If you suffer from horrendous stick drift, you can simply swap out the thumbsticks for a new one.
This is actually a big plus, because you no longer need to go to a professional to have it opened and replace it, and you can do it yourself. It also saves money, because now you don’t need to buy a new controller in case the stick drift is not fixable. Each replacement will cost you $20 in the US, €25 in Europe, and £20 in the UK.
Moving to the back, you can see that there are extra buttons in the back. By default, they are shaped like coins that are protruding from the back. However, if you don’t like that, you can easily switch it for the lever-shaped designs. These buttons on the back are remappable, which you can take advantage of for when you play games.
Looking above the extra buttons, you can see that there are two extra switches. These switches can control the travel distance of the triggers. This makes it easier for when you want to shoot, all the while still feeling the DualSense’s haptic feedback and trigger tension. As of right now, no other third party controller offers this, making this a unique feature for the DualSense Edge.
