It’s no surprise that in a survival-crafting game like Nightingale, farming would be a possibility. While not a necessity to progress in the game, it is a good idea if you want a lot of plants for crafting. Or maybe you just really like being able to farm in games! Either way, if you’re not sure how to get started, here is our complete guide to Crop Farming in Nightingale!

Crop Farming Complete Guide

While some players have struggled with Nightingale’s farming mechanics, we’re here to tell you it’s easy! With some simple tips and tricks to maximize output and minimize difficulty, you’ll be a farming pro in no time. But first, how do you get started?

Getting Started

Before we can get our hands dirty, we need to know how to start farming. You’ll need a couple of schematics which can be obtained from the Forest Antiquarian Essence Trader. If you haven’t yet unlocked Antiquarian Realms, here’s our guide to getting the Antiquarian Card.

Once you’re at the Essence Trader, your first step is to purchase the Plant Box schematic. This will cost you 5 T1 Essence, and each one requires 4 Lumber to build. Simple!

I don’t know why you can’t just plant things in the ground, but then again, I’m no professional.

Watering Can

While still in the Forest Antiquarian Essence Trader, pick up the schematic for Simple Watering Can for 10 T1 Essence. Trust us, you’ll need it! To craft this, it requires:

Your Watering Can can be filled from any source of water in your current realm. If you’re a little further on in your game, you can also buy the schematic for a Rain Barrel. This is purchased from the Forest Astrolabe Essence Trader, and crafting it uses:

This is a great idea if you’re not immediately near any lakes or rivers. Place it next to your garden and you’ll have a ready source of water on hand!

Plant Box

Once you’ve got your Plant Box, you can place it either indoors or outdoors. However, it’s important to note that there are differences! A Plant Box placed indoors will have the “Sheltered” trait. This will decrease the growth rate of plants by 25%-75%.

On the other hand, an outdoor Plant Box will have the “Exposed” trait. This increases the growth rate of plants by 25%-75%! Definitely the better option, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Planting

Now, it’s time to plant! Seeds can be found all across the Realms, either from foraging wild plants or as loot. If you need more, however, you can craft them at the Simple Mortar Station. If you don’t have this, purchase the schematic from most Essence Traders for 55 Essence Dust. Building it will require:

  • 3 Lumber
  • 8 Fibre

How do you craft a seed anyway?

Here, you can use 5 Plants to craft 1 Seed. Or, if you don’t have enough of the plant you want, you can use Plant Fibre to craft Crude Seeds instead.

With seeds in hand, simply head to your Plant Box, plant them, water them using your Watering Can, and wait for them to grow! Different plants have different growth times and can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of in-game days.

Tips & Tricks

Once you’ve got the basics of crop farming down, it’s time to maximize potential. If you don’t want to wait around or you need loads of crops ASAP, we’ve got some tips to help you out!

Use the Charm of Bounty

First, the Charm of Bounty is a great help when farming. Using this, your plant yield will increase, multiplying the harvest by between 2 and 5. Handy! This can be bought from the Forest Antiquarian Essence Trader, so it can be picked up alongside the Plant Box and Simple Watering Can. To craft it, you’ll need:

  • 1 Rough Bauble
  • 1 Charm Twine (Mind)

Once created, the best place to put it is on your Watering Can. You’ll need this in hand anyway for farming, so why not? This Charm will also increase the seed output of your crops, making it easier to get more seeds so you can keep farming.

Best Realm for Farming – Herbarium Realm + Tempest

Now, for the best Realm for farming. The Herbarium Realm automatically makes plant growth quicker, so it’s a fantastic idea to focus your farming here. If you haven’t already unlocked this Realm, check out our guide to getting Herbarium Card.

In addition, if you’ve got the Tempest Card, it’ll cause constant rain. This means less time spent watering! If you don’t have it, purchase the schematic from the Swamp Astrolabe Essence Trader. Crafting it requires:

However, there is currently a glitch in the game which can sometimes cause rain to water a plot only 99% of the way. You’ll need your Watering Can to finish that little bit off, which is why it’s best to give it the Charm of Bounty.

If the water symbol is blue and it’s currently raining, then it’s glitched!

With all of those tips and tricks, you’ll be a pro-farmer in no time! No doubt your inventory is full to bursting now, though, so why not check out our Guide on how to Split Stack in Nightingale?
