Ark Survival Ascended is celebrating Christmas in a unique way with an in game event in the form of the Winter Wonderland Update.
You can download it in the form of a Mod and enjoy the unique Xmas themed content that replaces the Dinos, items and pets in the game. Additionally, many of the game mechanics also change up.
One of these mechanics allows you to get some amazing Loot from presents that are incredibly invaluable and difficult to find otherwise in the main game.
It has to do with one of the Christmas Dinos, the Pegomastax Grouch. In this guide, we will show you exactly how you can get the good loot out of them. Let’s dive in and get those presents!
How To Get Good Loot From Pegomastax Grouch
Before we proceed, you will need to first ensure that the Winter Wonderland update or mod is actually active.
We know that a lot of players have been having issues with it. Check out this guide on how to play Winter Wonderland single player if you’re having trouble with accessing it.
Once everything is set, load into the World. Before you start searching for a Pegomastax Grouch, you will need to craft some Gift Boxes.
You need at least 3 Gift Boxes to get loot from one Pegomastax Grouch, as you will see later on.
To craft Gift Boxes, you will need to use a Smithy and fulfill the crafting requirements, which are:
- Fiber x20
- Thatch x20
- Mistletoe x3
Once you have the Gift Boxes, you will need to search for a Pegomastax Grouch. You can find them anywhere in the map, but there are certain locations where they spawn more.
Check the Pegomastax custom marker on the map below, indicating a common spot you can find them.
Alternatively, you can even use a Dino Finder Mod that you can get from the Steam Workshop. It will make the task of finding one much easier as you can simply search for the Pegomastax Grouch there.
Once you have found a Pegomastax Grouch, do not engage immediately. Instead, go into your Inventory and equip a Gift Box.
After that, you can let it notice you. Once it does, it will immediately dash towards you. Don’t worry as this is exactly what you want it to do.
It will dash towards you and steal the Gift Box from out of your hand. After that, it will speed away at great speed. Do not let it get away.
Once it runs away, make sure that you can keep up with it. At normal pace it is virtually impossible, and you will likely need to tame a Flyer to keep up.
Alternatively, you can also go into creative mode to catch up to it.
When you do catch up, you will need to repeat the same steps and let the same Pegomastax Grouch steal a Gift Box from you again.
In total, you will need to do this step three times, and you can keep count by looking at the counter above its head.
Once it has stolen 3 Gift Boxes from you, he will stop and go into an animation where a heart will appear above his head. After that, presents will explode from his body and scatter all around.
You can now approach the presents on the ground and loot them. They look very fancy indeed!
You can get some really valuable randomized loot from each of these presents. In particular, you can get a Giganotosaurus Heart, which in of itself is worth the effort since they are so hard to find.

Not the easiest task as you will need to chase it down and it is incredibly fast. However, the effort will be worth it as you can get some loot that would otherwise require you to do a lot of grinding.
